What is the latest with Chicago and the handgun ban within city limits? I know TN does not have a reciprocity agreement with IL. And Chicago specifically is having legal battles regarding the ban.

My question is: I’m traveling up that way through Chicago (probably more than once) in the next few months. Is it even legal to carry my weapon in the trunk through this city?

Thanks.

There is still a total handgun ban in the city of Chicago. I'm not sure on any peaceable journey laws, but I certainly would not risk it.

I'm kinda in the same boat, I just got the southern portion of the Republik of IL, though not including the area around Khikago. Have to go there every couple of months. When I go into Il, from KY or MO, I unload my weapon, put it in the trunk and put the ammo in the glove box. Not sure if that covers my rear or not.

Best thing to do is lock the sucker in a case unloaded and in the trunk. If you don't have a trunk put it where it's not accessable.

Basiclly in IL you are SOL as far as carry is concerend. Each county municipality is different too. some allow you to posess them while others don't.

If you are going to be in cook county and/or the city of chicago. I would leave your gun at home.

I always make sure that the firearm and ammunition are locked up separately and that both are inaccessible to my wife and I.

If you are just passing through Chicago then you should be covered by federal law. NRA-ILA ::

18 U.S.C. § 926A

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

So, yeah, if you are passing through, legally you could transport your unloaded firearm, out of reach. (IANAL, just my interpretation of the above law).

However, that does not guarantee you are free from legal hassles. I know a cop from here who got hassled in Chicago, and he was legally carrying under federal law.....

I didn't know chicago had a handgun ban, how long is that in place. aand i guess we can't pass thru legally with a dissembled hangun I suppose either??

if you look at the all the laws, local laws trump state & federal. So I wouldn't want to be caught in chicago with any guns. period. loaded, unloaded, broke down or otherwise.

Don't give them consent to search your car and it won't matter.

The last time I drove through Chicago I intentionally didn't have a handgun with me. I had a disassembled carbine in the trunk, ammo up front.

When I travel back to IL to see family and friends, I travel as far north through KY and IN before I turn west. I usually lock my firearm in the glove box before I go across the IL/IN state line and it stays there until I get to my desination (60 miles south of Chicago). I usually take it into the place I'm staying at and leave it there for the duration of my stay until I leave. I haven't had any problems, just obey the speed limit and don't give the LEO's any reason to stop you and everything will be fine.

I grew up nearby. In general, Chicago is a great city but the mayor Ritchie Daley is a prick, and the politicians in Chicago are pricks. Evanston to the North and Morton Grove to the Northwest are full of Obomabots, have similar zero tolerance gun laws. Last time I looked, you had to have a FOID card (Firearm Owner Identification Card) to buy guns or ammo in Illinois, unless you have a out of state DL. My friends who live in these cities keep their guns at their parents or friends homes outside of city limits. Put the gun in the trunk. You do not want to spend the night in Cook County Holding. Trust me on that.

I spent 11 years living in WI and had several job offers in Chicago. The gun ban is one of the reasons I never considered any of them. I hate even driving through that state.

Excellent Video! I think they should show that in Drivers Ed.

They don’t because they don’t want their students to go to jail.

I have to laugh every time I see that video posted. In real life that would not have ended the way it did in that video.
