Acquired a new toy today: Any Thoughts?

I got hold of a Mossberg 835 in Camo with the National Wildlife Turkey Emblem. I got it for under $150 used from a source that said it has over 2k shells through it with no problems. I have more expensive guns, but hate taking them on certain woods trips when I know Im gonna beat them up in thick woods. - Also, I have a semi auto I hate. I just feel safer with a pump. I feel like its a workhorse thats gonna show up when you need it. Semi's have too many issues for me. Kinda like wheel guns vs semi autos.....

It has the 24" ported barrel with choke system.

The barrel has a few scratches, other than that, its in good shape with normal wear.

Id swear the gun hasnt been cleaned since new. I completely took it apart and gave it a bath for 2.5 hours.

It cycles flawless with 2.75, 3, and 3.5 shells. Its kinda heavy but feels good on point.

I thought it might make a good; Bedside BG Buster, beat and bang small game gun, and even a fine turkey gun with a shotgun scope and mounts I already have after buying a turkey choke.

Im gonna shoot 50 or so of various rounds through it tomorrow.

**Here is a question I have: It says on the barrel not to shoot slugs through it. Why is that (ported barrel?)? If I do shoot a slug through it, what will happen (major catastrophe?)?** Any thoughts or opinions on the model?

Thanks

Those are great guns perfect turkey killers, sounds like you got a great deal. As far as no slugs, as long as you dont have a extra full choke in it you should be fine nothing more than a modified choke with slugs is my preferance. I've never heard that about that model , I'll have to do a little research on it.Ok mossberg says those barrels are overbored to 10 gauge to reduce recoil so slugs should not be used because they could turn and become lodged in the barrel. I can't see this happening but its up to you. A slug barrel is probley about 150 bucks for it.

haven't heard of it happening but the 835 bore is larger than standard 12 gauge bore. this overboring doesn't support the smaller diameter of the slug correctly so it in theory could turn side ways bit. seems like trying to squeeze wobbling slug through any choke smaller than cylinder bore could really do a number on the choke and barrel. even if you did get out the barrel safely it couldn't be very accurate.
