Remington 870 Wingmaster 16 gauge mfg date?

I have an old 870 in 16 gauge. The serial number is 72251W. Can anyone give me help finding out how old this gun is? I have had it since the late sixties but my great uncle owned it before.

Remington serial numbers are not reliable for dating. If the barrel is original to the shotgun, the barrel date code will give a reliable date.

Call Remington at 800-243-9700 one of the choices on the recording is the Historian. I called them on an 870 and they gave me the manufacture date and what configuration and options it shipped with.

The original barrel KBd back in 1973. I have a new barrel on it now. That 1-800 number works! They are closed today but I will call them Monday. Thanks.

If you email them and give the serial number, they will get an answer back to you. Just checked on an old model 11 yesterday.
