Deer delimna?

I have a delimna, for the last three days I have noticed a small spike that appears to be injured on the back side of my property. So today when I saw him I walked towards him and he didnt move I got within 10 feet of him,the closer I got I saw the problem. There was an arrow sticking out of his left front shoulder it was imbedded about half way. You cound plainly see the infection around the wound, the area was bare and oosy with pus.I noticed that the other deer have even isolated him, and as he moves toward them they go in a completely other direction. As I stood there he started walking away, the fence that is back there is about three feet off the ground and the deer couldnt jump over it he tried four times and then finally gave up and laid down. My question is .Should i shoot him and end his misery or leave him alone? You can see that this deer will probably die. I know deer season is over; and wouldnt eat him anyhow being infected like that, would probably bury the carcuss.

Sounds like a good time to call the game warden. It would be a shame to just let him suffer.

Yeah, that is a tough one, arrow in the shoulder and infected. He may get over it, may not. Several years ago there was a doe coming in to my place that had an injured rear leg. It was painful to watch her struggle on three legs. She eventually lost part of the leg from the mid joint down and did quite well on three. The last I saw her was late spring last year and she had a fawn trailing with her. We had a pack of feral dogs, coy dogs in the area and I guess they got her.

If that spike is lying down he probably needs put down. JMHO.

Call DNR and maybe ever get some pics if you can. Shooting game out of season can get you in big trouble.

I'd probably call a game warden and see if your allowed to put down the deer., the TWRA Gun Range has had a warden there everytime I go shoot so maybe give them a call. Don't want to get in trouble for doing the humane thing.

+1 oldogy...If the coyote's get to him first, that little buck will suffer a horrible demise...coyote's start from the rear...and eat foward. He will literaly be eaten alive.

The deer most likely will not recover if it is infected already. Just think what that broadhead is doing to that animal every time he moves his leg. If it was me and the deer was on my land, I would put him down.

Thanks for the advice. TWRA has been contacted and gave me the o.k.I started to take him yesterday but I know my luck, about the time I pulled the trigger the game warden would have drove by, and then that may have been a hassell. THANKS AGAIN FOR ADVICE.

I wouldnt even be asking this question i would have already laid him down to sleep and buried him or dragged him off after all buzzards have to eat to.

I think OP asked a very honest question and calling the TWRA is the right thing to do.

I commend you on your act of compassion.

And on a somewhat dark sided thought. After he is down for good. Hunt over his carcass and take out as many yotes as you can. No good deer eatin vermin!

Indeed it is I have a neighbor who is a game warden and I asked him about this when my dad and I bought the farm in dayton. He told us if it is injured go ahead and put it down. If anyone asks questions refer them to me and I will tell them I told you to do it.

Damned right. The ones the cows dont stomp I shoot when out at the farm. Most of the time I cant shoot em though cuz the cows have done run em all over the place trying to kill em and they hit the barbed wire fence and are gone. Hell hath no fury like a 1500 pound mama cow and a 2200 pound bull chasing after a coyote. Often times the yote cant run fast enough and the cow gets in a few good kicks before its said and done.

I didnot have to shoot the deer by the time I came home from work that say he was already dead I think my dog got him. We bagged 4 yotes over the next two days, that makes 19 for the year.
