Newbie reloading mistake

I learned a valuable lesson this weekend. When you scrounge brass at the range make sure you check the primers to see if they are berdan or boxer. For what it's worth, a berdan primed round will break a decapping pin and bend a decapping rod in an RCBS die. :2cents:

I found replacement pins, anyone know where I can find a replacement rod around Knoxville?

Check the phone book or online for a dealer close by that has one. If you have to order one, add something to the order to make up for the shipping. Might as well get 2. have 1 for a spare.

Yep, I wasn't watching, picked up 25 nickels cases from the trash. With 500 cases, I wasn't watching. On my Lee, the first pushed the pin out the top. Repositioned the pin and tightened it a bit more, snap. All 25 cases had a green ring around primer.

Now, if I collect brass from a range. After tumbling, I roll the case, checking for cracks and look into the mouth at the fire hole.

You may be able to take one out of your other RCBS decapping/sizing dies.

You may want to give Ensley Shooting Supply a call in Louisville, TN (link here: Ensley's Shooting Supply, Louisville, TN, 37777 - YELLOWPAGES.COM). He is a good guy. If that doesnt work; the best bet is to probably order from Midway. They are usually no more that 3 days to knoxville.

Hope this helps.

Leroy, Ensley's is probably a good call. I've known Ray for a while and he's always taken care of me.

I found them at Graf's, Midway and RCBS and the problem is that the shipping costs as much as the part. I guess I need to find some more stuff to buy.

The Lee pin I broke was 1.99 through Lee. Shipping was 2.00.

I ordered 3 for the same shipping.

Now I have a spare at both locations.

I did the same thing this weekend loading some 9mm. I had not seen any berdan primed cases in my stash of 9mm brass but there was apparently one out of the 500 rounds I decapped today.

My dies were RCBS as well. I just stole a pin from another set of dies but am going to order up a handful to have on hand for the next time.
