Keltec PF-9 Light Strikes

Defender

Recommended Posts

I have a Keltec PF-9 that is one of my BUGs. I had put about 75-100 rounds thru it with no problems. Today I fired it again and shot about 50 rounds of Monarch ball. I had 3 or 4 rounds that didnt fire. When I removed them they all had indentations on the primers. I reloaded them and tried again, still wouldn't shoot. Then I put them in my Bersa Thunder mag and fired all of them the first time. Now I'm really concerned about carrying the PF9. Last thing I need is to have to try to use a BUG and have THAT happen. Does anyone have any suggestions? Could it be that its that brand of ammo in that gun perhaps? I plan on putting a lot more rounds thru it before I chance carrying it again, thats for sure, does anyione have any ideas? All input appreciated. Thanks.

I owned a PF9 and found out that you must allow the trigger to release fully to get a reset or the next shot will be a light strike. The trigger pull is long and hard and if you are trying rapid fire sometimes that will happen. Try allowing the trigger to return completely forward.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I too am getting light strikes with a PF9, it is going to be my father's carry piece. Had one tonight that didn't light, put it back in the mag and it fired off on the second strike. I picked up some brass that I shot through the gun and it also had very small dimples, too small to be comfortable with. I'm used to my Glock which knocks a really nice hole in the primer. I may call KT and see if they will send another firing pin, it may be that it is out of spec... that or the hammer spring is too weak or something like that. I'll keep you updated with what I find out barewoolf.

barewoolf, after I posted last night I decided to tinker with it some. I went to pull the firing pin and firing pin spring out, but the pin wouldnt drop out under its own weight... hmmm.... I had to use quite a bit of force with some pliers to pull it out.

I read about using a drill bit on KTOG to clean up the firing pin channel. So, I used a 5/32 drill bit and BY HAND ran it up an down in the firing pin channel to remove any metal burs or crud in there. Quite a bit of metal filings came out on the bit itself, and as I worked with it I noticed it got "slicker" feeling as I was smoothing the channel out.

Then I chased that with a cotton swab with CLP on it to get any remaining crap out. It got quite a bit of crap out of there, and to remove any left over filings. Then I tried the firing pin and it would easily fall out under its own weight. The last step I did was take some fine grit paper and polished the fat part of the firing pin to slick it up and help it out as much as I could.

I haven't gone back to the range to test it. but I can tell that it is louder when it hits the snap cap, so it looks promising. I'll have to get to the range soon and try it out for sure but I think that may be the ticket.
