ok, so it has happened to me and i have put the fraud alert on my ssn with the three credit bureaus. now i just need to get the extended seven year alert in which they contact you when there is credit trying to be put in your name. i did hear that a police report does have to be sent in to the bureaus in order to get it done. i am wondering what all i need to take with me to the police station other than the papers from the debt collectors and the fraud forms. is there anyone that has delt with this situation before and could loan me some knowledge???

you know, that is a good question.

i do have reason to believe that it was an ex of mine seeing how she had a set of my dogtags. but i have no proof of that so i really dont know how it happened. i just started to recieve letters from companies that i have never been to. credit cards, at&t accounts, bloomingdales, macy's...

i would just suggest that you be careful on how you use your ssn. and view your credit report when you can

I knew a girl that hit up with id theft so bad the only way she could afford to get out of it was to change her name and get a total new identity herself. lady bought a house and was in prison last i heard.

There is a lot of good info at the Federal Trade Comm's site (www.ftc.gov) including how to get a truely free credit report, that's available to everyone, once a year by law. (Not one of the places where you have to get a trial membership, like you see on TV)

Good luck, I hear it's a long process. Let us know how it goes so we can learn from your hard luck.

I had to deal with a little of this a year ago. Just bring in any documentation you may have, and get a copy of the police report as soon as you can. Send a copy of it to any and all that have a concern in the debt, send it certified mail. Do everything by certified mail, phone calls will get you nowhere. They will send you some forms, get them in as quick as you can. I still have a ding on my report from the "incident" but it is not worth any further hassle for me to get rid of it. Good luck.
