Are we allowed to carry in a bank in TN if they aren't posted? I keep reading on defensivecarry.com about all these people that carry into their banks in other states... Some even OC....

If they are not posted, you are allowed to carry.

I used to have to go into 1st TN to deposit money for the company I was with. I was carrying, at times, more than 10k in cash. I had a conversation with the guard about it. He wasn't up on the law but he did some research and found that it was legal to carry in banks. These guys that don't know the law are dangerous.

I do carry into my bank (business-related), as it is important because of my situation. Everyone's scenario may vary, but if they're not posted, I'm carrying. Sometimes, banks can be the worst places to be, honestly - armed guard or not.

I work for a bank and I can tell you that it is legal. However, just like people said earlier, it's the people who don't know the law who you have to watch out for. I was subbing at another branch one weekend and a gentleman, who was OC'ing, walked up to a girl at another station. She freaked out, said he couldn't carry a gun into a bank, and threatened to hit her alarm button. :poop: I knew she had a tendency to overreact to things so I walked over and told her it's legal since we weren't posted and took the gentleman at my window. She then went on after he left about how guns make her nervous and... :blah::D

"Can't carry in a bank" is the near the top of my list of misinformation declared by/asked about by our HCP students.

It's one of those items that usually begins with the famous "My next-door neighbor's aunt's sister's son-in-law was in the South Dakota Game Warden academy, and he said :D:blah::blah:"

While you probably won't be in a hollywood style bank robbery, you know, guns drawn, you never know. There have been multiple bank robberies here in west knoxville in the past year (including one at one of the SunTrust I use), but they have all, but one, been quiet, note only bank robberies. Heck, I found out that one of my friends from college was the teller at the first downtown Clayton bank robbery last year. All he gave her was a note. So using your gun against a bank robber is very unlikely, but if one was aggressive or it turn into a hostage situation, it'd be nice to have:)

BTW, I was very very happy to have a gun on me when I took $20,000+ worth of gold to the bank last year. Talk about being careful!

When I was an asst branch manager and manger, I had a few guns pulled on me. One was a baby glock, Liquor store owner just got it, had to show me, the other was a HK that another guy had just bought, it was nice.

I opened carried one day by accident, didn't tuck my shirt in good enough. I was fortunate enough that my head teller informed me that I was showing!:D:devil:. I was the manager at that branch.

I had a Kentucky State Police officer try to tell me I couldn't carry in a bank in Memphis.

I don't blame you though! I wish our policy would change and let us carry while we work. I suggested they let us post our shooting range targets in our teller window saying "your teller today is (insert name)"

Yeah, that's incorrect. Bank employees would have to be federal employees for it to even start to be illegal.

Bzzzzttt. Another common myth, thanks for playing.

That's like arguing that you can't carry in private homes financed by FHA, either. ;)

Only Federal buildings prohibited.

definition from 18 U.S.C. § 930:

(1) The term "Federal facility" means a building or part

thereof owned or leased by the Federal Government, where Federal

employees are regularly present for the purpose of performing

their official duties.

This makes about as much sense as not being able to carry in a bank because it's FDIC insured! ;)

I carry all the time at banks. It's a good place to be armed.
