For those interested in hearing Gen. Petraeus speak/answer questions, and it's free:

Gen. David H. Petraeus to speak at Vanderbilt - Vanderbilt University: myVU

Interesting wiki fact:

"Upon promotion to lieutenant colonel, Petraeus moved from the office of the Chief of Staff to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he commanded the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)'s 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment from 1991-1993. As battalion commander of the Iron Rakkasans, he suffered one of the more dramatic incidents in his career when, in 1991, he was accidentally shot in the chest during a live-fire exercise when a soldier tripped and his rifle discharged. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, where he was operated on by future U.S. Senator Bill Frist. The hospital released him early after he did fifty push ups without resting, just a few days after the accident."

Interesting article on the soldier who shot him:

"There will be a heightened level of security for the event. No food, drinks, backpacks or bags will be permitted in the Student Life Center ballroom. Purses will be permitted. All attendees are subject to searches and/or pat downs and anyone can be refused entry without explanation."

No thanks. He would probably be interesting to hear though.

Well to meet someone like that, some people might have to deal with not having their gun for a an hour or two.

:drama:

He puts his britches on just like the rest of us.

I have met him a few times at Ft. Campbell, he like Colin Powell are not your run of the mill military leaders.

Doesn't mean they would make good politicians.

Very true. Absolutely no weapons of any kind allowed anywhere on Vandy campus. Especially with someone like this on campus. I should've mentioned that. Certainly seems worth it to me.

Reminds me of seeing Bush at a Notre Dame commencement. VERY tight security as one can imagine.

Have you ever served in the military, let alone under the current leadership?

Guys like this are LEADERS, not managers like most officers are.

Besides Vanderbilt is private property and as property owners, they have the right to limit someone having weapons on their property. Just a fact.

To see someone like this, you might have to go *gasp* unarmed to the event....... Just like to Titans stadium or a million other places.

Your choice to miss out on something you don't get to see every day.

My wife and myself are going to try and get tickets to go.

Don't know what this has to do with anything...

let alone under the current leadership?

Bad situation to be in for sure.

No, no, I get that.

I don't mean any disrespect to the man. I just don't have much enthusiasm for many of our leaders nowadays. He may be one of the greatest leaders ever. However, I know he could not have gotten there without great people to lead. That's where my enthusiasm lies. ;)

I do hope you and your wife have a great time.
