Tn Theater Reception Jan 24 to support Sgt. York Maxim display

A buddy of mine just told me about the article in the Knox News Sentinel about one of the Maxim machine guns Sgt. York captured being at a reception at the Tennessee Theater 24 Jan as part of a fundraiser to support setting up a full display at the Museum of Appalachia. The weapon will be there and they're showing the Gary Cooper Sgt. York movie. Gotta love that! I think I'll have to dip into the gun fund and attend (it should be tax deductible also!).

Knoxville showing

The gun will be displayed 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Tennessee Theatre during a special VIP reception.

Former U.S. Sen. Howard H. Baker Jr. will welcome special guests, and WBIR, Channel 10's John Becker will serve as master of ceremonies. For ticket information, call the museum at 865-494-7680 or visit www.museumofappalachia.org.

Ticket proceeds will go toward safely securing the weapon. Later it will become the centerpiece in an extensive York exhibit.

That movie started my love for military rifles. I had to have a 1903 springfield "riflegun" and "shoot plumb center"!

You may want to pick up an M1917 "Enfield" as there is much debate over what he actually carried in France. Last I heard it was highly possible he trained on an '03 stateside and was issued the '17 over there as they were produced in far greater numbers.

That's just one side of the story. Some guy trying to sell a CMP 03 at a gun show last year assured me that he was close personal friends with the York family and swore it was a Springfield he carried.

Just make sure you have both rifles and you'll be covered. :D

Something like 75% of the Doughboys carried M1917s in France.

I would enjoy seeing that movie on a big screen.

Next time I go to Crossville I will ask York's grandson if he knows about the rifle.

Ask him also about the Maxim that was in the library attic at one time and see what the latest info is about it being confiscated from ATF for not ever getting registerd. I believe they wanted to confiscate it which means it would get destroyed.

I remember something about this from last year.

I have my eye on a 1917 enfield.

The machine gun is now properly of the Norris PD and on loan to the Museum of App.

York's son Andy is the park ranger up at his house in Pall Mall. Good source of info. Or Dr Michael Birdwell at TN Tech in Cookeville. He's the currator of the York Papers and has done more research than anyone out there. He's the expert and would know for sure. I'll try to contact him myself.
