I'm Ken and live in Nashville. I plan to buy a pistol soon -- probably a compact Glock. Have never owned a pistol before but I am concerned that our eco-social superstructure seems so fragile. - KQ ;)

????? What's your concern? Economic unstability? Job loss? Fear of total collapse causing TEOTWAWKI? Or just gun fears in general? Personal defense weapon?

Glock's a good choice for a first gun. Have you tried different guns/calibers? Glock 19--9mm is a good place to start. Check out different gun shops in the area. Check rental guns to try out and find something that feels right for you. I'd suggest Guns & Leather in Greenbriar as a start. Good selecrion. Fair prices. And a friendly staff that can awnser questions. They also have probably the best range facility in the area.

Don't be intimidated by all the choices. Start slow. Pick one and jump in.

We all started the same way as a novice.

Good luck.

Ken, looking back at my response,to you; it occurs to me that I could offer to help. If sometime in the next couple of weeks we could meet at Guns & Leather, I'd be glad to let you fire a couple of my guns and see what you think.

Try going to a gun range that rents weapons ..rent and shoot.See what you might

feel comfortable with. Also find a place that offers the Handgun Carry Permit course

and get started on it. You need both...a gun and a permit. Good luck.

You can conceal your new pistol under your tinfoil hat! :)

I'm kidding, but if you're serious... :screwy:

Welcome to TGO.

Hipower, I would like to take you up on your kind offer. Maybe the middle of February?

Welcome!

I know how you feel - I bought my first handgun right after the last presidential election... You'll probably find though that it's more fun and addictive than you thought it wouls be. (Like a lot of people on TGO.)

Don't overlook the possibility of getting a revolver either.

I am still somewhat a newbie and I wanted to say +1 to the Glock 19 comment. I always thought I'd start with a revolver (and I may still get one) but a police officer suggested that Glock's are so simple and reliable that that they are the revolver of autos. I thought it was odd at the time, but now I understand exactly what he meant. Additionally, 9mm ammo is cheap and available easy to shoot so it's a great learning gun. Lastly, if you decide you like something else more, you can always sell a 19 for near what you might pay for a new one.

Thanks Xreed, Dwarren and TnRebel. I'm leaning towards a G19 or G23 and more probably the 19, on the theory that any non-range shooting I do will likely be one-handed, off balance, point and shoot. -kq

Personally, I would never recommend a Glock for a 'starter' pistol. If your heart is set on a Glock-type, I would say an XD or M&P (Smith&Wesson) would be a better choice. I say this due to Glock's single-action-like light trigger pull, and lack of a grip or manual safety mechanism.

The XD has a grip safety (standard) and the M&P now includes it (manual safety lever) as a factory option.
