Remington Pepperbox

I thought I would share this and ask a question to all you seasoned firearm vets out there. I have a Remington Elliott 4 shot Pepperbox from 1860 that has been in my family for 150 years. My Grandfather's Grandfather carried this while he was a railroad detective. It still functions and is in excellent shape with no rust and I want to keep it that way. Can anybody recommend a good gunsmith I can take this to? I want someone who I can trust to take this apart and do some preventative maintenance on it to make sure it doesn’t rust. If anything happened to this gun I would have to kill someone. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I won't go to CC.

I would not mess with it. Any restorative work done to it will decrease its value.

I would oil what I can reach, wipe the gun down good and leave it alone.

That's the one.

I like that idea. Is there a certain type of oil I should use for a gun this old?

Breakfree makes a "Collector" oil that is ment for storage.

Nice, I believe I will have to aquire some.

yep CLP will work. Never tried the collector oil, but I will be on the lookout for it to use on the safe queens.

I would be leary of letting anyone take it apart, surely there will be marks from that process.

Are any of the screws boogered up already?

caveman, The folks here have the right of it...don't do anything to it but clean it, oil it and leave it be.

If it were me, I'd make sure to grease up the exposed metal areas with cosmoline(if you don't handle it much) and put it in a box in a gunsafe with a de-humidifier in it.

Nope, none of the screws are jacked up. It has been sitting in a display box my Grandfather built. It hasn't been touched in 50 years. I took the box apart to make sure it wasnt rusting. So, I will just wipe it down and put it back.
