With the unnecessary deaths due to vehicular swiping, why isn't it SOP to talk to the driver from the right side where it's usually safer and you also get the vantage point of seeing more of what's in and around the driver's seat?

No surprises.

Memphis has lost the most by far with 69.

37 of those were to gunfire. The only other department to have a total count of 37 is the THP and the vast majority of those were to auto or motorcylce accidents.

Here is from another post I did that shows it nationally based on the last census 2006.

In 2006 there were 683,396 LE. This only LE officers. WikiAnswers - How many police officers are employed in the United states

In 2006 there were 156 LE killed in the line of duty:Honoring Officers Killed in the Year 2006

9/11 related illness: 5

Aircraft accident: 3

Assault: 2

Automobile accident: 36

Bomb: 1

Duty related illness: 1

Gunfire: 51

Gunfire (Accidental): 3

Heart attack: 14

Motorcycle accident: 8

Stabbed: 1

Struck by vehicle: 11

Vehicle pursuit: 3

Vehicular assault: 17

or 1:4380

You all should be more concerned about car wrecks than people with guns.

From the 2006 Census:

2006 US Pop: 299,398,484

2006 Violent Crime: 1,417,745

or 1:211

Conclusion? Civilians need to be more worried about violent crime than LE by quite the margin In other words I'm 20x more likely to not make it home alive than a LEO due to violent crime.

Incident Details

Cause of Death: Gunfire

Date of Incident: Friday, June 27, 1919

Weapon Used: Officer's handgun

Sheriff Stephens was shot and killed by two horse thieves he had arrested and was taking to jail. The two had been arrested in Nolansville and were held there until the arrival of Sheriff Stephens.

The sheriff and the two men left Nolansville to return to the jail in Franklin but never arrived. Sheriff Stephens' body was found on the Wilson Pike the next morning suffering from gunshot wounds. It is believe that the suspects disarmed Sheriff Stephens of his pistol and rifle and shot him. They then stole the weapons and buggy.

Sheriff Stephens had been elected to the position the previous year.
