Wow. :taunt:

This is by far the freakiest and most extreme looking issue I've seen posted about a 1911 yet. If I had been shooting the gun, when that failure occurred, they'd still be sponging fecal matter off the floor and walls of the target range.

P.S. - At least it wasn't a NightHawk or Kimber this time.

This is also not to be confused with the "Home DIY Ultra Compact Conversion". :D

Guys,

Look at these pictures. Has anyone seen this before? I've never seen this before this one. There was no indication of failure before this happened.

The front part of the slide, recoil spring plug, and barrel bushing landed about 10 yards down range. Ammo was Blazer 230gr aluminum case. No other damage with the gun was noted. The round fired prior to the failure, felt no different than any others. Total rounds through this gun is less than 2000.

I need to contact Dan Wesson for repair. Who should I contact? Is Keith still with them? Anyone have his email address/phone number?

Thanks,

Jeff

If I'm not mistaken Dan Wesson used cast slides on some of their early guns and there were some problems, I'm wondering if this was one... look at the cracks on the left side of the slide in the last picture...

That is what happens when a company rips Ed Brown off by making a wannabee Executive Carry!!!!!!!:taunt: sometimes you get what you pay for

:taunt: Don't be such a gun snob.

That is an older 5" PM7 that doesn't even use the LICENSED EB Bobtail.

one of my clients gave me an Ed Brown 1911 a few years ago. It was very nicely finished, but I saw nothing unique or original in it. I've also owned Kimbers, Baers, a Wilson, Clarks and Colts. I keep going back to the original Pre-1975 Gold Cups and Vintage Clarks. I just bought a Taurus PT1911 on a whim last month (fell off the snob wagon).

As for being able to rib off Brown, I seem to find only one patent application, for their bob tailed main spring housing... It would be very difficult to say they do much original, although they do seem to do what they do well. Hard to make the connection for me between brown and this mishap.

My mistake, I thought that frame was Bob tailed!

Can't patent a modification to an existant patent. For a patent to be accepted it has to be significantly unique. Apparently their attorney thinks only the main spring housing unique enough to fly...

I know, the mainspring housing is the Bobtail, im not sure but i think Ed Brown is the only one who sells them?

I remember seeing some one doing this about 20 years go at the Shot Show, but I didn't pay attention until I was given one of Brown's guns. Heck, it may have been them, for all I know.

This is why I feel the 1911 is a moderately acceptable sidearm for well trained gun conscious LE on a budget. If this was a .40 S&W the unsupported chamber would really be a problem. I would call that a KA-Broke!:taunt:

what do you mean? not all .40sw are unsupported. a lot of .45's don't even have a fully supported chamber

It was a joke. Actually most 1911's do not have a fully supported chamber.

Had an almost new S&W 686 Cylinder had large chunk blown out by Blazer 125 GR HP

S&W repaired for free. Case was split in half. Only problem ever had with ammo

1911'sdo not have a fully supported chamber.

This is acceptable due to the lower powered .45acp cartridge.

Looks like that 1911 in the OP was made with low quality metal. I bet it had nothing to do with ammunition.

Someone posted these photos in the original thread. Figured I'd link them over here, also, to be fair.

I would bet that there is alot more to that story... perhaps a very, very weak recoil spring which allowed the slide to recoil violently enough to batter and shock the slide & frame to the point of fatigue?

I like how the Kimber has been "photochopped" into a glock
