Ammo and Insurance

Have recently been looking at all the options of insurance policy riders to cover my handguns. Everyone of them wants to know what I have and how much I paid for each of them. However my question is at anywhere from $15 and up per box ammo do most policies cover replacement of my ammo supply? Have not found an answer since most sites just quote you on the policy but you don't actually get to read the policy until issued. Anyone know?

From what my agent told me the only items that required different coverage was firearms over a specific amount. Ammo and accessories would be covered under contents and since I have replacement cost on my policy .... No worries for me. Just have to keep good records.

I have records, photo's, and software to keep up with my inventory.

Damn good question....although....wouldnt "content" insurance cover that?

And, another place to start, would be to call a LOCAL insurance agent and pose the question to him/her.

Just my :D

The only thing I would be careful about is if there was a fire you may not want to claim a huge amount of ammo. Some Policies limit the amount you can have, if you had say 25,000 rounds an insurance company may try to say that your ammo did more damage then the actual fire.

Not that I have heard of this happening, but I have occasionally had to deal with insurance companies and they always try to give the least amount possible, and will look for any excuse to cut back on the ammount they pay out.

If you are worried about theft that would be a question for an insurance agent. It would also be a good time to bring up how much ammo you plan on having in the house.

I asked my insurance agent wife about this tonight. She said that ammo would just be considered as part of your personal property coverage limits, just like your furniture or stereo.

And she's never heard of any limit on the amount of ammo that could be covered. As always, it's best to read your actual policy as every company words things differently.

Most insurance policies have internal limits for guns much in the same way that jewelry, furs, silverware, and monies are limited and separate from the personal property. I'm an independent insurance agent and most homeowners policies we sell limit the gun coverage from somewhere between $2000 and $5000 unless they are specifically scheduled or listed on a rider. These limits are a total available, not a limit per gun.

Hope this helps... if anyone has any more questions, i will be happy to share what i know

The ammunition will be covered under the regular personal property limit along with holsters and other gear.

I just recently met with my insurance man about upping my coverage. His standard limit on firearms is $5000. He advised me to invest in a good safe (which I already have) rather than spend money on a rider for more coverage. Bless his heart, he's an honest man.
