Barrett Rec 7, 6.8 SPC

I have been bitten by the 6.8 SPC bug. Catridge performance answers several questions I had regarding the 5.56. Don't get me wrong, I am crazy about the 5.56 I have for varmint hunting. It is a 20 inch White Oak barrel with VTAC handguard, SOCOM manufacturing lower and Leupold 6x24 target scope. What I seek now is a reliable operational rifle with improved performance in a 16 inch barrel and using a EOTECH sight.

My research tells me that the Barrett Rec 7 is an outstanding example of a rifle in this caliber. I also like the idea of a piston system instead of the plain gas system. I know that it is expensive but I am trying to find out if the value and performance match the price. Can anyone provide some input?

Having put hands on and shot the work of art that is the REC7 I have to say that price and performance are actually not that equal.

It vastly outperforms it's price tag. The piston system is in itself a masterpiece. Once piece design that is completely accessible from the front. Runs extremely cool and clean, even with a suppressor. The ARMS fore end is very nice, helps keep a lot of the heat build up that you see with normal hand guards way down.

And it's a tack driver. Very accurate, with irons, out to 300. (That's the farthest target we had.) Very easy to control, and it's backed up by Barrett's outstanding customer service.

I'm having a 6.8 being built at Hero Gear in Winchester using Hero-15 upper and lower. :taunt: Give Joe a call.

Ditto, hopefully they'll be done soon.

I've been wanting a REC 7 for a while, but decided to go with Joe's Hero-15 for the time being. I definately the REC 7 is one of those guns that you won't have buyers remorse over. Ad if you do, they're fairly popular so you could probably move it quickly if you decided to sell it.

Thanks for all the input. My reaction from the comments is that the Rec7 is a great rifle. It is interesting to hear that HeroGear is an good alternative. I have purchased several firearms from them so I will definitely follow up with them about building a rifle for me since I planned to buy my rifle from them in the first place. Any additional comments will be greatly appreciated. Again, thanks to all.
