Value on Winchester Model 70 30-06?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about picking up a Winchester model 70 30-06 SPRG. Serial number is 8007XX. According to the serial number, it's a 1965. That's based on what I found doing a search.

Any rough ideas?

The model 70 is a great rifle. The Model 70 Black Shadow is more cheaply made, but the others are supposedly wonderful rifles. I have a gunsmith friend who said he would rather have a 70 than a Browning.

One of the all time great hunting rifles. I would try to work the price down maybe. I love the Model 70. The new ones are sweet also.

I can get it for about $300, but I was thinking it was worth a bit more. I'm not going to mess with it.

If you are just going to flip it on here; no that’s not a great price. But if you want a bolt, that is a hell of a deal compared, to what you would have to spend to get something of that quality today. Especially if that is the original Walnut stock.

I would jump on it at $300, but that’s because I would like to have it to keep.

That is a historic rifle model and caliber like the one used by Carlos Hathcock, USMC Scout Sniper in Vietnam. I believe his was a pre 1964 though.

I own five Model 70's and shoot or hunt with all of them. Four are pre 64' rifles and one is a Winchester Repeating Arms heavy barrel varmint in .243. My primary hunting rifle is a pre 64', 30.06 and shoots minute of angle in original, unaltered condition.

Although the rifle you are considering is a post 64', the $300 price tag would tempt me to buy it for hunting and shooting. You will not, in my opinion, be able to buy a better made rifle for $300 no matter how hard you look. There is one similiar to this in a pawn shop near me and the price is $500. Although they would take less than that, there is no way that I could acquire it for $300.

If you want a great rifle at a great price, buy it as soon as possible.
