If the drive is spinning it should be read. You can right click on My Computer and go to Manage. Once there go to Disk Management. You should see the drive listed there. If you do not you should also check the Device Manager (also under Management) are there any items that have a yellow ! on them? This would indicate a device that has not loaded correctly.

Your drive should be disk 0 mounted on c:

The laptop drive should be drive 1, it may not be mounted. Right click on it and assign a drive letter. It will then show in windows explorer.

I'm am in the process of returning the laptop to it's original/factory state.

It says:

- Reformatting the Windows partition of your hard disk drive

- Reinstalling original content.

Estimated time remaining: 80 minute(s).

I guess we'll see if this works.

That took care of it. May have lost some files, but at least the laptop can be used again.

I do have a question, though. It says Drive C: has 84% free space and Drive D: has 0% free space. Is that normal? Afterall, the laptop is now back to factory condition.

A friend of mine is here with her laptop that won't boot up. Can I plug the laptop HD into my PC to see if her HD is bad? If so, can you explain how I go about doing that?

What model? When the PC boot, you should at least get some display. If you don't get any display, it could be the PC. You should be able to press F12 on a Dell to get the option to go in the BIOS. If you see the hard drive there, then physical HD might be good and only the OS might be corrupted. If you do not get any display then, it might be the machine. If you would like help, I can try to help if you give me a number. Its my daily job, getting people up and running, data recovery for those user that refuse to backup or do not know what it is. Only 1 HDD could

C:/be actual usable partition

Yeah, that's that I was thinking.

Just wasn't sure why a message telling me Drive D was full if they are all like that.
