Alright boys, the match director has approved 22 rifles for the Steel Challenge matches at ORSA. AR's with conversion kits, 10-22's, 597's or any detachable box magazine fed 22 rifle as long as it safe and serviceable. No tubular fed magazines (safety issues).I would have at least 3 or 4 mags as you have 5 runs of 5 rds minimum (if you don't miss..and you will :D) for a minimum of 25 rds per stage. 6 stages are usually shot for the match. It's the best way to get alot of trigger time without breaking the bank. Competitors must have a bag or chamber flag. I made a flag from weedeater string and red tape. Works great! Hope to see everybody on Jan 23rd. Match starts @ 10:00 A.M.

I am scheduled to work on that Saturday. Will this be an ongoing event? What is a bag or chamber flag? I'd like to participate, have never done steel before.

A chamber flag is an indicator that is placed into the chamber through the open bolt with the "flag" extending to the exterior of the rifle. That way it is easily discernible that there is not a bullet in the chamber. A "Bag" is simply any gun bag/sheath that the rifle can fit into. Once the gun is cleared by the RO, the shooter places it into the bag. The gun is only to be removed from the bag under the ROs direction (or in the designated safety areas).

The steel challenge matches are shot the 4th Saturday of every month, and rimfire rifles will shoot concurrently with the pistol shooters. There will be 2 divisions, one for rimfire rifles with optics (RRO) and one for rimfire rifles without optics (iron sights - RRS)

So we only need a bag or a chamber flag but not both right? Also i have never shot in one of these and live in Oak Ridge wish i would have known earlier but how far are the distances for rifle w/ optics and with iron sights? Thanks

You don't need both, only a chamber flag or a bag (though you could use both if you desire).

Right now the plan is to shoot exactly the standard COFs that the pistol shooters use. The distances are about 10 yards to 40 yards, though the targets for the long shot are rectangles about 18 inches by 24 inches. Go to steelchallenge.com for rules and stage design.
