didn't know how to word that title and don't know if this is the right place but here goes...

I grew up around norris and would like to start going to the range up there.

1. i don't have very many gun cases

2. if i'm going to drive an hour to go shoot somewhere i wanna take just about all i got.

I thought about just trying find somewhere that sells foam (like really big blocks of it) cutting some slits in it, stuff it in a big plastic storage box and throw it in the back of the jeep. that way i wouldnt be lugging around a half dozen rifle cases etc... anybody know where i could find some foam material like that?

Layered foam will be easier to find and set up .. then just glue up the edges with 3m trim adhesive from an auto parts store.. Upholstery shops Jo-Ann Fabrics stores etc. will have foam slabs

Lowes / Home Depot sells the 2" blue hard density foam board if you are looking to cut outlines easy and sandwich them in

I have in the past used a few moving blankets layered between my military rifles and put the targets and range bags on top to keep them from jostling around though my heavy scoped rifle has its own case which also holds the scoped pistols sometimes..

So we have a Jeep and some guns we need to design a case for.. I am thinking the storage box (with maybe bolts through the bottom and a lock) with layers of foam and handguns like a layered cake would work well.. rifles will be a bit trickier as to the length.

On a pickup truck I once saw a truck toolbox converted to a rifle setup, it held the rifle and gear along with a single stage press and components so he could reload @ the range another guy built a subfloor in his Suburban that slid out between the wheelwells I see you can buy them now pre made ..

let your imagination run your options are limitless.. I would make it secureable to the vehicle so you can run into a shop on the way home or they stay with the vehicle in case of an accident I wouldn't want to imagine a hundered pounds of guns bouncing down the road in a storage box...though that might make a good commercial it owuld suck if it happened in the real world..

For quick and dirty custom foam forms, wrap the gun with food wrap. Make it many layers so the covering is at least a quarter inch thick everywhere. Get a box big enough to hold the gun with an inch or more around every dimension. Buy some canned expanding foam at Lowes or Home Depot. Cover the food-wrapped gun with petroleum jelly. Cover it thoroughly. Lay down a base of foam and let it cure enough so you can lay the wrapped gun on it. Carefully foam around the wrapped gun so the foam expands above the top of the gun and curls around the top a little. After the foam hardens, using a sharp serrated knife, carefully cut away the foam enough to remove the wrapped gun. Then cut vertically around the inside edges of your form.

You can line the inside of the form with cloth, ultra suede, or whatever you like. just make sure you cover the gun with many layers of plastic food wrap, and then completely cover every inch with petroleum jelly before using the expanding foam.

I moved all my long guns from Michigan wrapped in bubble wrap, lying behind the front seat. Zero damage.

I had the same problem… taking an arsenal to the range. :D

Academy runs these cases on sale for about $24. They are very cheaply made and are usually already banged up in the store, but they will hold two rifles and have thick foam padding. The foam would probably cost near that much.

Sometimes you can find queen size egg crate mattress toppers on sale, cut them to size.
