40 vs the 9mm?

I prefer the Glock 27. It has a double recoil spring and to me actually kicks less than the 26. I've been carrying it for years with a clip draw attached to the slide. Nice, small, and packs a pretty serious round....

Sorry but I don't buy the argument at all, especially as relates to the first sentence of his statement. 40 is no ego trip. If you want to make some ego trip claim why not 50 cal? It is an especially superfluous argument coming from someone who has the screen name for the 10mm, a 40 mag essentially.

A 9mm is cheaper to shoot, that's for certain.

The argument that it will stop someone in their tracks if fired at center mass is definitely not a certain statement, it is a general statement. It has proven to be untrue many times. The same can be said of every handgun caliber. The odds are good a center mass shot will put down an assailant with any of the major popular defense loads would also be correct and any would be better than no gun.

I was a die hard 45 cocked and locked shooter for years. Even carried one UC because the Bad Guys didn't think you could be a cop with a cocked and locked 45 tucked in your belt....Duhhh. When the agency I worked for said no more single action autos I switched to the 40 and never looked back. Sure I still like the feel of a sa colt, totally indestructable weapon, but times change. 40 has about the same ballistics and you can carry a few more rounds. Ego round?? Not many agencies use the 10. All that really matters is how you feel and how confident you are with your weapon. If I shoot someone with my 40 he's going down. I"ve had every nine I ever wanted and they've been around a long time, nothing wrong with it, just not for me...

I carry an XD-40 myself, but my wife carrys Taurus 9mm. I like the .40 and find it controllable. I think the idea that the .40 has a harsher recoil than the 45 comes from the fact that most 9mm and .40 cals are on identical gun frames where a gun made to handle a 45 is usuall built up a little more to handle the additional pressures. If a gun was designed specifically for the .40 it might be balanced to handle that round's recoil better than a gun built for 9mm.

Ofcourse that is a totally uneducated guess.

If you go with the.40 cal Glock, you can then buy a 9mm conversion barrel that will fit it. Add a few mags, and you end up with BOTH a 9mm and a .40 cal Glock.

All the issues seemed to have been covered, I just wanted to offer my personal experience. I bought a glock 22 because I am considering a career in law enforcement and wanted to practice with what I may be required to use one day.

The g23 was too small and didn't feel good in my large hands. The recoil of the 22 is pretty snappy but nothing too bad. Although to be honest the only other handgun I have shot was a .22

I am very happy with my glock 22. I may end up getting the 9mm conversion kit for cheaper practice and plinking.

I have narrowed some guns down to the one i am wanting to buy. I have always wanted a glock, and from what i have read on the forums glock is a really good choice. So here is my question. What are your takes on the 40 verses the 9? I'm not that keen on caring a compact gun. The reason is i have large hands and can't grip it that well. I could use the mag extension, but wouldn't it be just as good to get a standard and get use to carrying it? I would like to know what you all think about that as well.

My choices are the G19(9mm) or the G23(40) in compact size. And in standard i would go with the the G17(9mm) or the G22(40).

If there are any other guns that you guys carry that you think i should check out first please post. I could read reviews all day online, but i would much rather hear from actual owners of the gun.:tinfoil: Thanks!

You should take a look at the G32 which is a .357 and it is not too bad for carry. I doubt you will carry a full size very often especially in the summer time when it is hard to conceal.

I agree that the Springfield XD's are worth a look see. They make a very nice gun. I own both a Glock and and XD.

I just got back from Glock late last night and handled a new G22 gen 4, they have a dual recoil spring which is said to reduce felt recoil to close to a 9mm. If I were the OP, I would start with a G19 and go from there. I'll post some other Glock info I learned yesterday in a new thread later tonight!!! COOP

Kick less then a 26? I never shot a 26 but I did own a 23 and I suck at it but very accurate with a 30. I bought and selling the 27 but never shot it but was worried that I might shoot it like a 23. I do love the feel of the 27 but I don't want to shot it because I am selling it. Maybe I will go to a range and shoot a loaner 27 and maybe keep the one I have if what you say is true.

The double recoil spring does make a perceivable difference. I have more fun with my 19, but seem to be slightly more accurate with my 26. As an observation, when I had the exact same dilemma as to 9 or 40, I noticed that usually the first thing that people say is that they LOVE their 19 (as I do now). I figure, poke a hole in a guy at around 1100fps, they' probably wont measure it before they decide to stop what ever it is that they are doing to prompt having that hole poked. Either way, I hope you (or I for that matter) never have to learn if that's true through experience. I'd vote 9mm. Ammo's cheaper, so practice will be easier to financially pull off. Where the hole is will have much more of an impact than if the hole is 1mm bigger or smaller, and your going to have more of a say in that matter if you have more practice.

+1 That made the decision for me. Lean mean and 9x19!
