My son bought a S&W SW9VE Sigma 9mm pistol 2 days ago. We went to the range this morning. After firing about 4 rounds the extractor sheared off. Anyone heard of this gun having this problem?

The Sigma series has had it's issues. While not top notch pistols, they usually are decent guns and give little trouble. I've heard of a few people having had issues with the extractors. My personal issues was with a 40VE which had a feeding issue. After multiple mags, recoil springs and tinkering, I sent it back to S&W for warrenty....they told me the slide was something like .000001 off on the left side which was causing delayed lockup. When I got the pistol back, I sold it for dirt scraps....:stare:

I had a SW9VE and it was a great gun to train with.

I really got good at the tap rack bang and also the terrible trigger made for shooting about any other gun a dream.

Like Mikedwood, I had a Sigma once, too. The SW40VE was my first gun. Awfully heavy trigger, and yes, after a few hundred rounds the extractor broke... sent off to S&W for a quick repair and it ran flawlessly after that until I sold it about a year later. I also had the trigger worked on by a gunsmith and he brought it down to about 7lbs.

Extractor problems seem very common with the Sigma series. Like others have said, it's a great training pistol. When you step up to something nice later, it'll feel driving a Rolls Royce after years of driving a beat up old Kia.

Now don't take any of this as an insult to your son's choice in buying the gun. They are great guns for the price, and a pretty reliable gun once some of the kinks have been worked out, and since S&W has a lifetime warranty that isn't a really a problem at all!

Happy Shootin'!
