By the way, the cost of COBRA coverage recently changed (from IRS.gov):

"Workers who have lost their jobs may qualify for a 65 percent subsidy for COBRA continuation premiums for themselves and their families for up to 15 months.

Eligible workers will have to pay 35 percent of the premium to their former employers.

To qualify, a worker must have been involuntarily separated between Sept. 1, 2008, and Feb. 28, 2010.

This subsidy phases out for individuals whose modified adjusted gross income exceeds $125,000, or $250,000 for those filing joint returns. Taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income exceeding $145,000, or $290,000 for those filing joint returns, do not qualify for the subsidy."

More information is available on the Department of Labor website.

Good luck.

Yeah good luck and check into what Loon is saying here. Could save you several hundred dollars a week. If you have diabetes then you are going to have to keep the Cobra going over all else.

If I remember right unemployment starts after you have been unemployed for 2 weeks so you will miss a check or two.

If you get the full $300 a month I wouldn't rush to bagging groceries at Krogers part time just to have a job. Go with whatever puts the most cash in the bank, cut back on what you can and fake it till you make it back into another job.

Is that 300$ a week tax free? That's insane, I know plenty of people who are salaried who make that working 40 hours a week.

No, I think you have to pay income taxes on it at the when you file at the end of the year. So when you get it it seems tax free because there are no deductions, then when tax time rolls around and you are like WTF.

They might have changed that though.

I use to get laid off a lot when the tech bubble was bursting.

You have the option of getting the tax withheld now or at the end. Either way, YOU WILL PAY!
