Tomorrow I pick up my stripped lower and begin my build in earnest. I have been researching ARs for a while and decided that even though I haven't handled one since BMT in '96 I am gonna jump in and do it whole hog and build it myself. I have a basic idea in my head of what I want, but I don't have experience with what manufacturers make quality parts, who is overpriced and who to avoid at all costs. This is where y'all come in. I will use this thread throughout the build and solicit input on parts and design.

Internally I am leaning towards mostly USGI and externally fairly basic with a few personalized touches. I am not looking to build a high end super mega ultra .000001 MOA tacticoolio monster rifle. I do want to end up with a solid, reliable battle rifle that can take a little abuse yet still perform when it needs to. I don't care about pretty, I like functionality.

So first question, I need recommendations on a LPK. what are the pro's and con's of some of the different manufacturers? I do plan on having the trigger worked over, but not too much, so who makes a good LPK at a good price?

Thanks in advance for the help.

G&R Tactical put together a nice LPK.

That said, I used a DPMS LPK, and I've never had any issues.

Also, keep in mind that with the waning market, you can pick up a fully assembled rifle from Colt, Daniel Defense, or LMT for a very good price right now.

Thanks. I saw the sale on the DPMS LPKs, good to know they are ok. will order one of them.

Anybody know anything about DS Arms uppers? Reviews are scarce, but all that are out there seem to be good (checked arfcom) and right now they have an upper on sale for 275 minus the BCG and charging handle.

Check out their uppers while you're there, Chuck.

They're top notch

I took your advice and found a LMT upper assembly - BCG and charging handle for $485 that I think I have just about decided on.

LMT 16" M4 Carbine Upper Receiver Group

combine that with the Magpul MOE stock/grip set from brownells in FDE and I am starting to get a pretty good idea of what she is going to look like. :D

Things are going quicker than I had initially planned, I found a full Moe set complete with Mil Spec hardware kit for $120 and I ordered a sling adapter from this guy just because of the name of his website. If it sucks, it was only $20.

It is amazing how much money you can "find" once you get started. :koolaid:

I think I am going to order a stripped upper from Bravo Co. today. I picked up a Roggio Arsenal stripped lower about a year ago, and I am just now getting around to finishing my build. I installed a DPMS LPK, and all the parts fit perfectly - good kit.
