You ought to be able to dispatch anything with 10 rnds.

Any ONE thing. My thoughts on home defense changed after I read about the home invasion that featured 7 thugs busting in on that family.

I was referring to game animals. If it's brown and not down after 10 you be in trouble. :bored: I stick by the AK for HD because of the added magazine capacity. Heck 7 thugs? Whatever you use grab two!

I have owned 2 AKs (Chinese and Bulgarian) and an SKS (Chinese). I still own the SKS. It shoots more accurately and comfortably than either AK and is every bit as reliable.

I've never heard anything good about higher capacity mags (especially but not limited to the detachable/AK mag conversions) for the SKS. I'm sure somebody has one that works, but the majority do not.

Keep the SKS, buy a **** ton of ammo and a bunch of strippers, and practice.

I hear good things about the VZ58, but parts availability (COMPARED to the AK and SKS) relegates it to an "I got".

AK over SKS without question sks has way to many issues with the magazines the average person who has never owned an SKS (which I have) cant even get the magazine in the gun lol. I love AK's I have had several different ones from Mak 90's being the cheapest and Polytech Legends being the most expensive all have been great guns.

I have also had alot of SKS's I dont own any more and wont ever again the only one I owned that I kind of liked was my paratrooper but I still didnt trust it like an AK. I see most SKS's selling for about $300 and if you look around you can find AK's going for $400( I bought another MAK 90 last week for $350 only thing was had a nice chip in the stock which I already had a spare so easy fix )

I have a yugo sks right now and I like it except it is long and heavy. and I know ak's are good for functioning in undesireable conditions. so lets hear some opinions as I am wanting/thinking about trading up from a sks to a ak, the only thing I don't like is losing hte ability to load with strpper clips.

let here some input from those with experieince with these. I am staying with 7.62 x 39:tough:

1) losing stripper clips for mags wanting "firepower" is like losing a 4cyl for a 8 cyl. So, you can't use stripper clips? You have 30-40 rounds IN the gun and by the time you can load 10 with a stripper clip I can load 30-40 more with another mag. Oh, and using stripper clips in sub-optimal conditions isn't as sure and fast as a mag change

2) HDR - AK wins, more ammo on board, quicker to reload

3) survival - SKS wins mag built in and fixed. Even if you manage to bend it, the SKS will work as an easily loaded single shot. Ruin (or lose) your last AK mag and you have an awkward to reload single shot. Get down to your last AK mag, after 30 rounds you have to reload the mag or have an awkward single shot. Not to mention, 200 rounds in stripper clips weighs less and takes up less space than 100 rounds in AK mags.

Thus, you need both.

I have two USA SKS 30 round mags for my SKS, & I get no JAMS, the SKS will be more accurate than the AK !!!

How many full mags have you put through the SKS to determine it's jam free?

I really like the stripper clip idea instead of having to reload mags one cound at a time. we finally took the time to mag this rare fixed 20 yes 20 round mag to work. most don't even know they exhist here is a borrowed pic of one. I would like to get a different sight on the end of the muzzle that doesn't have all the extra weight and bulk of the grenade launcher sight.11487774.jpg

I saw one of those mags on gunbroker, the staring bid was $70. I would like to have it but not for that price.

AJ Try Cogan Custom for a replacement sight. There is a link earlier in the thread. Spendy but nice. Heard good and bad about the 20 rounders. Let us know how they work out for you.

I have that same setup 20rd mag on my Norinco Sks. I bought it (20rd Mag) from SKSMAN Paul's Guns - The SKSMAN - Products Listing Page- Your source for SKS Rifle and AK-47 accessories I've had the 20rd mag for a few years now and I know I didn't pay $70. Just make sure that If you pay that much for one that it Chineese made and NOT A KNOCK OFF!! I have Not had one problem with either the Mag or Sks Rifle. Each of us have our own likes and dislikes,I just don't care for the AK, It's just not for me thats all.
