They have been discussed here before. IIRC they don't operate a semi-auto and in a pump gun sometimes they try to turn sideways and won't feed reliably.

X2

Those do say they work in pump guns, but alot of the ones I've seen specifically say single and double barrel ONLY.

Suggestion for all you folks looking to use birdshot, mini-shells, etc instead of buckshot for home defense:

Do NOT load your shotgun. Grab it firmly by the barrel with both hands and CLUB the bad guy with it. Be sure and keep a firm grip so that the gun does not fly from your hands and penetrate walls behind which crouch the loved ones you are protecting.

Oh, and be sure to put birdshot in all your handguns, too.

I pretty much agree there. Birdshot might work ok in alot of HD situations, but by my way of thinking it could also put you in more danger than you would have been in if you hadn't tried to stop the BG. I shoot it in my HD shotgun from time to time if I'm just shooting for fun, but when it's at home it is loaded with 00 or at the very lease #4. We can never really know what the situation will be when the HD gun is needed, but I just have to hope that I can get a shot off that is not in the direction of any of my loved ones. It can be argued that we can never be sure if we can get this type of shot in a HD situation, but it can also be argued that we may not know for sure where exactly our loved ones will be in the situation. Personally I at least like knowing my ammo will do the job, that way all I have to worry about is doing my part in the situation.

I think this thread's about run its course, probably several times. Neither side has convinced anyone on the other side to change their minds. I'm going to close it, and let's all agree not to start a similar thread for at least a year, OK? We'll just refer people to this thread or a thread on another forum.

Good grief!!
