Gangsta Grip?

The Gangsta Grip: As police chased Raymond "Ready" Martinez through Times Square on Thursday, the street hustler and aspiring rapper fired two shots, holding the gun sideways "like a character out of a rap video." According to the New York Post, Martinez's side grip caused the gun to jam, enabling police to shoot and kill the suspect. What's the point of holding a gun sideways? To look Hollywood, of course. Journalists and gun experts point to the 1993 Hughes brothers film Menace II Society, which depicts the side grip in its opening scene, as the movie that popularized the style. Although the directors claim to have witnessed a side grip robbery in Detroit in 1987, there are few reports of street gangs using the technique until after the movie came out. The Hughes brothers didn't invent the grip, though. In 1961's One-Eyed Jacks, Marlon Brando used it, as did Eli Wallach in 1966's The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Directors may prefer the style because it makes it easier to see both the weapon and the actor's face in a tight camera shot… (It may well be apocryphal but I was once told that one former gangbanger claimed that when he had been capering he never knew what gun he might pick up and whether the fit in his hand might cause the gun to shoot to the left or the right. By turning the gun sideways, he claimed that he converted any lateral deviation to vertical deviation, which meant he would still hit the opponent, perhaps higher or lower than he intended. The Hollywood theory sounds more plausible.)

Side grip has been found to be notoriously inaccurate. And therefore, useless in self defense.

The firearm (Mac 10?) the criminal was using is prone to jamming without the proper ammo and maintenance. I think this is absolutely the case in this situation, as the side grip would not have made a difference in the firearm feeding its next round.

Here we have a person committing a low level crime (selling pirated movies) jump to a high crime in an instant.

This was a justified use of force for the police, as the use of the side grip and firing in a city street by the criminal, showed a total disregard for the safety of the general public.

I am banking the "family" of this criminal will be asking for their version of "justice" and demand to put the PD on trial... This is not a case for a lawsuit, as the Police acted with restraint (stopped shooting and removed firearm from criminal, rather than shooting til the criminal was immediately dead...)

There is a place for the side grip - example - Soldier firing full automatic into a charging opposing force (the recoil moving on the horizontal plane instead of the vertical...) but, in most cases - Hollywood is make believe...

I seen cops on the show COPS using the sideways grip.

That's probably because they were taught to do it that way. Holding the gun sideways like that gives you a very stable shooting platform when shooting one-handed. It helps absorb recoil in much the same way as the same arm position helps absorb shock when you punch someone.

I seriously doubt that holding the gun sideways had anything to do with the jamming. It was more likely another factor, like a faulty extractor.

seems in carry class we talked about shooting one handed and we were told to hold the firearm at a 45 degree angle when shooting one handed, stand shoulder facing target, not chest facing target, and shoot. the recoil is easier on the hand that way. do not, i repeat, do not hold the firearm at a 90 degree angle, you will look very stupid when trying to look through the sights, most likely you will look like a retard.....
