Reserve LEO

So far I have had the privilege of serving our country by sitting on a federal grand jury for 18 months. Its the second longest service you are ask to do outside of military duty. Twice a month all day long roughly 8 to 10 hours we met. It had it's down side obviously but at same time I did feel like I was giving back to my country as a whole. I am now considering volunteering at my local sheriff's office. I can volunteer as a reserve deputy(No Pay) I have to commit to work at least 16 hours a month. Anyone else done something like this or considered this?

As soon as I get time I'm planning on do it. I have a friend (who is on here) that works as a reserve. I was actually about to start with a small local PD here by Memphis awhile back, but there weren't enough people in my group that could pass the psych test so the class got canceled.

You should definitely look into it though. I've always thought it was a cool thing.

What's the psych test like? Do you have to have previous LEO/military exp?

I'm intrigued.

Do you have to complete a full academy?

I talked to the Williamson County Sheriff about this about a month ago they are taking applications right now but they currently have no openings, once the have 5-10 openings they will hold a training cousre for the reserve programm applicants

I started off with the local S.O. as a "ride along", then went to reserve status. Granted, all departments probably don't work exactly the same, but here's the answers for mine:

Do you have to complete a full academy?

Nope. No requirement at all for a reservist, other than the once a month meeting/training.

You do have to graduate from a certified training academy within on year of being hired full-time, however.

What's the psych test like?

Pretty lame, actually. ( Hell, they hired me, so what does that tell ya? :death: )

Do you have to have previous LEO/military exp?

No, but it probably helps bump you higher up the list.

What exactly are the duties involved with being a reserve deputy?

Same job as regular L.E.O.s, only usually supervised, plus you get to work High School events like basketball/football games, count fairs, etc. You'll sometimes get paid for these by the school or whoever has organized the event. And after a while, you may be sent off to collect prisoners from other jails/jurisdictions.

Oh, and concerning that 16 hour thing... I usually got at least 40 hours a week in... sometimes more, sometimes less. But then I'd sometimes work two shifts a day/night, most weekends, and tried to get out as much as possible during the busy times.

The bottom line is that "more is better", if you have any plans of going full-time. The more you're seen, the more likely somebody higher up will be to find an open spot with your name on it.

One last thing... DO NOT get suckered into working the jail on a regular basis. You'll never get anywhere but there if you do.

Edit: I almost forgot: You'll likely have to buy your own equipment ( gun, radio, etc. ), and possibly even your own uniforms.

Hope that helps some.

J.

This has crossed my mind as well....sounds very interesting and a good way to give back to the community. My wife wasn't as fond of the idea though.

Hell, no! Finding them trying to stick you with prisoner escort duty? I'm fragilistic!
