My step-son's 1st gun!

So my step-son is turning 12 in March and has decided he wants to have a gun that he can call his own. He shoots with me regularly at the range and does a great job with pistols and long guns.

We took a field trip to Gander Mountain to let him shoulder some .22 rifles. He had to twist my arm! We also went to WalMart and the gun he chose was actually $30 cheaper there.

He chose a nice little Mossberg 702 Plinkster synthetic stock .22LR semi-auto w/ a 10 round magazine. $107 for a tough rifle that you can beat up and really learn on without worrying about scratching it. I anticipate this being the first of many guns he will buy over his lifetime. Once he spends some time with the open sights, I told him he could have one of the scopes I have in the safe.

This experience reminded me of doing this same thing with my dad at about the same age. What a great feeling I had then and now. I can't wait to do the same thing with my younger son next year.

That's certainly better than what I learned to shoot on. I learned on a BB gun that didn't have sights on it. As funny as it sounds I was quite accurate without sights.

EDIT: Geez! My left pinky seems drawn to the "W" on the keyboard.

Once again, celebrating the instinctual shooter!

LOL! I think that it helped me become a 4th consecutively awarded "Expert" with the M16 when I was in the Marine Corps. If I'd stayed in the Corps and shot "Expert" two more times in a row I'd never had to qualify again.

Brings me back to my Nylon 66 days...

All the young'uns go what? He wore nylons?

Man I miss that gun.

Good on you for taking your step-son out for his own gun. I tried to take my nephews to the range while they were here visiting from NC and I thought both of their parents were going to stroke out right in my living room...

My step daughter and her kids (12 & 13) were her for Thanksgiving. None of them had every fired a gun and she wanted all of them to learn. I took all three of them to ORSA and let them shoot both revolvers and semi-autos. They all did well and it was fun for me to teach them.

I'm a member at ORSA and that's where my family shoots. At times, all of us (myself, my wife, step-son (soon to be 12), my 15 year old daughter (probably the best shooter out of all of us), and my 10 year old son) will be there shooting. Sure beats the heck out of watching TV or playing video games!
