Red dot scope

I've never owned a red dot scope before. I have been looking at them for a while now but one question I have on them. Do they magnify your field of view at all or are you just looking through a scope with a red dot in the center?

Most models have no magnification but I have seen some that do offer a small amount. When you see the spec 1x30 for example, the one indicates no magnification. Something higher than one notates magnification. The number after the "x" is the diameter of the objective lense.

You are correct, the aiming point is the dot rather than a crosshairs on normal scopes. The advantage is a quick sight picture.

Here is another thing to remember that 99% of folks have no clue about. The smaller the dot does not equal the more accurate the scope.

People think that a 2 moa dot is better than a 4 moa dot and so on...this is utter hogwash. You use the top of the dot as point of impact at 100, 75, whatever you are sighting in for. By doing this you have a 4 or 6 moa dot this puts the bullet 100% in the dot area in a given range (25 - 150 yards for example) - a point blank area. That is why these scopes are great for hunting or military use.

If you have an astigmatism in your vision...naturally these scopes may be problematic.

Never even thought about that. I do have astigmatism. After reading a little more about them I think I will go with just a regular scope. I've already got a green laser mounted on my M4 so really I think the dot wouldn't be much more help.
