M&P DIY Trigger Job

Thought I'd post this in case any M&P owners out there haven't stumbled upon it yet...

Top M&P-smith Dan Burwell has a "How-to" posted on doing an M&P trigger job here: S&W M&P Trigger Job

I just picked up a slightly used M&P9 (thanks Johnny Utah) after having owned one and then trading off one early last year... I put around 3000+ flawless rounds through it and really liked the outstanding ergos, and liked it overall, but the trigger reset, especially coming from Glocks, was really weak and vague and a little on the long side...

All I can say is I wish I knew about Mr. Burwell's link, I would've never gotten rid of it, in about 25 minutes this morning I was able to transform a stock so-so trigger with a so-so reset into an outstanding trigger with a very positive glockish reset. Took the weight down to a crisp 4lbs free of creep with minimal over-travel left in it, and the reset is just night and day, it's at least half as long as before and has a positive snap when it resets. I tried the M&P "PRO" model the other day, which does have a better trigger than the stock M&P, but it's garbage compared to where mine is at now.

I considered just sending my pistol to Mr. Burwell to do the trigger job, or to Smith & Wesson and having them install the Mass. trigger-bar and spring and performance center sear with their trigger job for $150, but now I'm perfectly satisfied with my own handiwork.

I highly recommend trying this if you're reasonably mechanically inclined and up to it.

Awesome info! Thanks for the link!

Just watch out for the itty-bitty plunger type thingy that is under the sear in the sear assembly block...

It's not mentioned in Mr. Burwell's directions because I bet for most it stays put, but it's small, I mean REAL small, and I almost lost mine when it dropped out... It's magnetized so if yours falls out just position it back over it's little spring with tweezers and it'll stay put until you re-install the sear.

Good luck!

I wish I wouldn't have seen this. I will have to try it.

I did my first Sigma and it came out ok, So I guess I will try this.

Shot 250rds today and the trigger job rules! I checked out the triggers on 3 stock M&P's side by side next to mine and the difference is unbelievable, in direct comparison the stock triggers are really lousy, I can't say enough about how much the trigger job improves the M&P...

FYI, I couldn't find any cutting/polishing stones at my local Home Depot so I just used the file then 600 grit sandpaper and it worked just fine... Just made my sear look like Dan's pic in his "How-to" and then polished up the striker tang with the 600 grit, I didn't even bother with polishing/rounding the firing pin block; didn't need to, wouldn't want it any lighter for my tastes.

BTW, He's right about how the M&P responds to the trigger job, not mushy at all like a Glock with a 3.5lb connector installed is...:death:

In case any of you guys are squemish about taking a file to your sear, looks like the folks at Apex Tactical have a x-mas gift for you... They're making a sear you just can drop-in and leave your factory one alone, the angles from a photo on the mp-pistol.com board look exactly how I did mine so I imagine it's pretty sweet, here's the link: www.apextactical.com

you guys have a good x-mas!

Cool. Thanks for the link.

I had already considered ordering a spare from S&W in order to keep the original stock. This will save time and effort.

You're very wecome, but hope you got one, looks like they've got a hot product on their hands... I just looked at their site and looks like they're already sold out! They said on the m&p board that the next batch is already on the way though... It's worth the wait, believe me!
