Hello everyone,

My name is Brian. I live in Springfield, TN. I have gotten the bug to start learning to shoot and for shooting to be a hobby for me. I shot bb/pellet guns for years as a kid and did a little dove hunting in my teen years.

I joined this site for a couple of reasons. First, I am looking to purchase a .22 rifle. So any reviews or suggestions would be great. Secondly, once I buy a rifle I will need some advice on cleaning, maintenance and locations to shoot. Basically I am a newbie and thought my brothers and sisters in Tennessee would be the right people to learn from and get to know.

My only current weapon is a single shot 20 gauge shot gun. I have had it for about 20 years now.

As I said I am looking to learn and have some fun shooting. I also want to teach my daughters and wife how to shoot once I learn, so we can go shooting together.

Have a great rest of the week and weekend everyone.

Brian

Welcome to TGO. I'd suggest a Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin Model 60.

Suntzu,

Why would you choose a 10/22 over a Marlin 60 or vice versa?

Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome. I've got a personal preference for the classis Ruger 10/22 as well, but the Marlin model 60 is a great, proven platform as well. You won't go wrong with either.

I have both. The 10/22 takes a rotary mag and you can buy extra mags for a fun day of plinking or hunting. There are aftermarket hi-cap mags available (several threads available on this forum that tell you which ones to get and which to avoid). The Marlin is a tube fed, so slower to reload. Both are accurate little guns. The 10/22 has about as many accessories available as an AR, so you can go from stock 10/22 to hundreds of dollars. If price is a driving concern, you can get into the Marlin cheaper, though a 10/22 won't be that much more.

If you are going to use it for foraging, and price is a concern, I'd go with the Marlin. If you are going to plink more as a trainer at the range, I'd go with the 10/22. A 10/22 is not going to break the bank by any means. I figure once you buy one of them you'll end up buying the other. It happens. :drama:

Hi Brian and welcome. I've never shot one but Marlin has a model 795 I think. It has a detachable magazine, so you could buy extras if you like. I've seen them for about $160. new. Just maybe another option you might consider.

Welcome from Chattanooga! I don't know how much you want to spend, but yesterday I saw and got to hold a new Ruger SR22 which had a free float foreend and was a sweet feeling well balanced AR-15 looking rifle. At the price ($400) you get more rifle than you would buying a 10/22 and upgrading. It also gets you a bad case of Black Rifle Disease, or gets you ready for your first AR-15. and you need a 1911 too.

Here is the link:

Good luck!

Hey, Brian,

Welcome. I'd have to agree with the 10/22 opinions above. I love the couple I have, but I need to ask what this "cleaning" thing is you speak of? I'm not familiar with that term in conjunction with a 10/22?

I think a Henry Lever action Golden Boy is a great .22 rifle, octogan barrel, will shoot, short, long and long rifle ammo. Very accurate and fun to shoot. It is also like going back in time. You'll love it, if you have kids they will love it and your wife will think it looks great.

TurboniumOxide,

Thats a bit more than I want to spend on my first rifle, but I like the look of the Ruger SR22. Thanks for the heads up. That gun might be in my future. I would love to build and AR-15 when I get some experience.

The Black Rifle Disease is creeping in and I have only picked them up in gun shops. hehehe I guess that is all it takes to get infected.

Have a great week everyone.

Welcome.

Other than a .22 pistol of some preference a .22 rifle is a must and a great place to start with family friendly and economical shooting. I bought the least expensive 10/22 I could find with a synthetic stock. It was dead on right out of the box. Picked up 4 extra magazines, a few thousand rounds of ammunition and that base is pretty much covered.
