Daddy's first bolt action?

Hey All:

I rarely venture to the long gun side of the TGO tracks, but I have a question.

Looking for a good, solid bolt-action centerfire rifle. Something that is common, been around for a while, plans on staying around for a while longer. Something to mount a scope on and shoot some holes in paper at a moderate distance. I'm thinking a Model 700? What else should I look at?

You really can't go wrong with either a Remmy 700 or a Savage 10. I have a Savage 10 Law Enforcement edition and I love it. Real tack driver.

Remington M700

Savage 10FP

Ruger M77

Winchester M70

Browning A-Bolt

A lot of the FN Bolt Actions are copies/variants of the Pre-'64 Winchester M70, so those are probably worth a look as well.

I'd take a good hard look at the Tikka T3. It's a Sako action - trigger breaks like the proverbial glass rod. Shoots under 1moa before leaving factory, available in 5 or 6 calibers, and around $500-700 (wood or synthetic?) out of the box with scope rings included. For the money, it's a heckuva gun, IMO.

+1

These are the best mass produced rifles. I have a remington sendero in 7mm rem mag. Also a tack driver. I think the Savage's are just as accurate and the adjustible trigger is really nice on them.

To get better, you have to look at a custom rifle imo. And that will set you back some serious cash.

The FN PBR and Swiss Mauser are great rifles and any of the German made Mauser surplus rifles are good to but they are harder to mount a scope to.

Surprised no one mentioned CZ, which produces probably the best rifle for the money. I love the single set trigger on the 550.

And it so happens I have a 550 Varmint in .308 to sell......

Goooooo MOSIN!!:):)

It's definitely been around a long time, and will probably be around 50 years from now. They are indestructible, fun to shoot, fun to collect, and the ammo is cheap. Kicks like a 30/06. If you get a good one (luck of the draw) it can be quite accurate.

Get on over to Walmart and pick you up a Rem700 for 300 bucks give or take $20. You can have a blast as is, or build it up into a $2000+ rifle. They have all sorts of flavors for you to choose there also, so for the price of a good used CZ, you could pick up 2 good 700's...1 short action, and one long. You definitely cant go wrong there.

I hear good things about the Howa or Weatherby Vanguards. Essentially the same guns.
