OK all of you 1911 shooters out there I need some advice. I need to pick up a couple of mags for my commander sized gun. Recommendations? I'll take reliable over cheap, but would prefer both.

Wilsons are fine, but then again, I've never had any problems with anything. I've heard good things about chip mccormick, they're affordable on midway.

Wilson Combat. The new "Elite Tactical Magazine" (ETM) version is really nice. The reason I dislike McCormick mags is the split metal follower; it tends to gouge the frame on alloy framed handguns.

I have around 6 mecgar 7 rounders, they imitate a standard USGI mag with a flush fit. Higher quality than USGI, imo. I can recommend them. Can get them at midway. I don't know about the 8 rounders.

I just got 2 wilson combat 8 rounders from Joe down at hero gear. I believe those are the best mags going, a bit pricey though, and they stick out a bit for that non-flush fit. But they do hold 8, thats better than 7. I don't know the model number, just give Joe a call. They know .45 stuff at hero gear.

I've never used a chip mccormick mag, but i hear good things. I hear less complaints on the net about wilson generally though.

I always used Wilson Combat... never had any problems with them like I did the regular GI mags that came with my Springfield when I had it. The only 1911 in my family right now is my wife's, and it runs great with the Novak mags it came with.

Agreed. Wilson Combats rule. All others follow. The difference between the factory mags and the Wilson ETMs in my Kimber is like night and day.

Joe from Hero Gear here on the board can hook you up.

Wilson Combat - even the older models - are great. The followers in mine are run as smooth as butter.

Another vote for the new Wilson Combat ETM's.

You get what you pay for.

As everyone has suggested, the Wilson Combat mags represent the Gold Standard of 1911 mags. http://www.wilsoncombat.com/a_magazines.asp

We stock 47D (8rd), 47OX (7rd Officer), 47T (10rd), and the new 500 or Elite Tactical Mag.

All are in stock, and waiting to be adopted...

If you dont want to spring for WC mags, I would suggest Chip McCormick https://www.chipmccormickcorp.com/match-grade-magazines.html as a very good alternative to the Wilsons.

Very true...not my favorite follower design.

But, if you're not using an alloy frame gun it's a moot point.

Mags I have had zero problems with in multiple 1911s...

-McCormick 8 round PowerMags

-Tripp 8 round CobraMags

-MetalForm 7 round "round-top follower" mags

-Wilson 7 round mags

Mags that have given me trouble in more than one otherwise 100% reliable 1911...

-Wilson 8 round mags

Hopefully the Wilson ETMs solve the commonly known weak spring issue with the older 8 rounders. Admittedly, many love the Wilson 8 rounders, but many have also experienced weak spring malfunctions (usually, last round failure-to-feed).

I really like the Clark mags with the rounded follower and I have a couple of them. Not certain, but they may actually be made by Kimber. Then again, I've got a pile of USGI mags and Colt Pre-Series 70 mags that I have used for years without failure.

I use CMC (Chip Mc Cormick) 8 Round Power mags, all of my 1911 pistols love them! Just do not use them in a non Steel gun!!

Dotson,

I have a Novak that came with the RIA and a Wilson Combat I bought seperate. Feel free to try them both this weekend up in Kingsport.

Same here. No problems out of the CMC mags. Love em!

I have a Wilson Combat handgun and of course use WC mags in it. But in all honesty, I've never had a problem with McCormick magazines.

So now I get to show my 1911 ignorance: My daughter had a swim meet in Cleveland yesterday and I decided to swing by Legends in Athens and see if they had any of the recommended magazines. I asked the guy behind the counter if he had 1911 mags and he grabs a mccormick mag from behind the counter and I happily walk out with it. I get home and it's for a freaking officers model. :( Please feel free to flame, laugh, or jeer at the newb that bought something he can't use. Yes I feel stupid.

My hope is that some kind person on here that owns an officers model would be willing to trade me out of that mag in exchange for a full size mag as driving back to Athens would not be cost effective. Failing that, at least everyone gets a good laugh at my expense. :)

A Chip McCormick Shooting Star came with my CD 1911. The McCormick would sometimes FTB the last round. So I tuned the extractor and bought a couple of Wilson Combat magazines. Never had any trouble since, but I rarely use the McCormick, so I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the failures.

Doc, I don't doubt it.

Just know that Shooting Stars are not in the same class as PowerMags...I really don't like Shooting Stars either.

I picked up a few no names from sportsmansguide.com Im runnin 3 different brands in my gov. no problems, usually with single stacks mags arent as finnicky as doubles. But any name brand is good. Of course Thats why I went with a GOV. model over a commander, whole different system.

If it's alloy, any of the factory or major brands except Mccormick will work just fine. If it's steel, any of the major brands such as ACT, Wilson, and others will work fine also.

I wouldn't touch the Chip McCormick ( had some trouble with brand new mag)

I only use Wilson Combat. For a good price try Brownells
