Back in the 80's during high school, I worked at K-Mart. They had the Muzak tapes playing all day long. Mostly it was elevator style music, but I could recognize about 50% of the tunes as current rock and roll songs. Funny thing was you could hum along with the song, but not really place where you heard it before.

Nowadays, they just play the current top 100 playlists. I guess it's all about playing to your customer base.
