Maglite for home protection

Recommended Posts

Posted

I was talking to my cousin earlier and he was saying how his 3D maglite was his home protection since he didn't have a gun. I told him that I wish I could I could afford to buy one for him when he told me "I'm not worried about that stuff happening". I responded by saying alot of people have that attitude until it's to late. He is not anti-gun just a little stupid I guess. With a wife and 3 children I think I would have something other than a flashlight. He is not rich but could easily afford something in the $300-$400 range but would rather have nice wheels on his car.

I love him like a brother and will probably get him either a pistol or shotgun as soon as I can find something for a decent price.

Jeez, even a $100 wal-mart .22lr rifle would be better for home protection than a maglight (actually, a maglight mounted on that would be ideal for cheap.)

But yeah, a used 12ga wouldn't cost much more. I think a ton of people are interested in guns, but are afraid of them because they don't take a little time to understand how to be safe with them.

I would get him a 12 ga as well. Best HD weopon for most purposes.

Beats taking a flashlight to a gun fight.

Go to a pawn shop and pick up a cheap shotgun. Less than $200 including ammo.

You really can't beat an old shotgun especially a semi automatic one for home defense. 9 times out of 10 you wouldn't actually have to pull the trigger simply working the action is enough to scare off most would be criminals.

If he won't get a firearm, at least buy him a good baseball bat. It would be better than a mag light.

This is too funny. That maglite is going to be one serious threat to the gun toting home invader.

Stop right there or I will flash you! You'll be seeing purple dots for the next 5 minutes!

If he can afford a gun, I wouldn't buy one for him. I would instead try to educate him on why he should have one and know safely how to use it. The shotgun is a great idea for someone kind of squeamish so that he at least has something for home defense.

Why would you buy a firearm for a man who doesn't want one? With all those kids in the house...

MagLites are great. I have several, and a 2-D model sits on my nightstand at all times. In a pinch I'm sure it would make a dandy club, but first I'll reach for the .357 that sits next to it while I sleep. (it goes back in the safe or is holstered on my person when I'm awake)

He'd probably hold it awhile to satisfy you and then sell it for some bling.

Be careful. Some people shouldn't have guns. Yes they have a right to them, but they shouldn't have them.

Someone who's not interested in guns is probably more likely to be careless with one.

Not just careless, but never shoot it, never get training, never know how to operate it remotely in an effective manner, etc. If you can't talk him into seeing why he needs a home defense weapon, there's no point in getting him one. I had to do the same thing with my brother. He didn't want one because of the kids. Then I made him understand that he needs one because of the kids. If you can't get him to shift his viewpoint and want to do it on his own, you're wasting your money, in my opinion.

That's exactly why the Commercial Appeal had such success with their online permit holder database. The database is still active and with not near enough opposition.

I don't believe I ever said he didn't want one. And what does having kids have to do with it. I guess anyone with kids should get rid of any guns they own.

I have discussed it with him and am 100% certain he wouldn't sell anything I gave him gun or otherwise.

Again I don't think I ever said he wasn't interested in guns. When we were growing up we did alot of hunting and he still fires a few rounds thru my guns on occasion. He really likes my LCP but he ain't gettin that one.

My main point here was that he doesn't think anything will happen to him that would cause him to need a firearm. Most likely he will never have a reason to draw a gun for defense but it only takes one time without one and life as he knows it could be over.

I used to keep a 6d in every car. I guess they would put a hurtin on someone if that's all you had available.

One day, I need to tell you the parable of the pig and the bicycle - or, how a Colt Python gifted to a relative under nearly identical circumstances wound up in a pawnshop when said relative needed $ to fix his motorcycle....

I guess my relatives are more trustworthy.
