I am looking for someone who knows the law regarding the transportation of a handgun (or any other gun) in TN. I came from Illinois and I have a feeling the law differs there. I do not have a carry permit yet, so am I allowed to have a loaded weapon in my car? Can it be within reach?

Thanks

that's what I thought also...but on gunlawguide.com, it says "Thus, vehicle carry of all handguns

should be limited to unloaded firearms which are in plain view or secured in commercial

gun cases. " What would constitute a commercial gun case? for reference purposes, I have a ruger sp101 revolver.

I gotta carry mine in the trunk...unloaded..the gun has its triggerguard on it and the key is on my keyring in the ignition...the ammo is also there, but from what I was told by my LEO buddies is the triggerguard counts as a seperate lock, as long as the key is not in near the gun. but that is hearsay..lol...just makes sense so I go with it

You'll need to disassemble the gun completely, making sure the firing pin is removed. Each piece will need to be locked in a separate box. Then you'll have to turn yourself in to the police because what honest citizen needs a gun?

No, just kidding. The advice given was correct.

If you don't have a license from a reciprocal state or a TN handgun carry permit, you can't carry a firearm with 'intent to go armed'. Without a permit, you can carry a firearm when hunting, fishing, target shooting, camping, or other outdoor type activity. You can, of course, have one on your property or other domicile like a hotel room loaded.

It does get tricky when you want to transport a firearm. The best thing to keep from looking like you 'intend to go armed' is to have your handgun in the trunk unloaded away from the ammunition (where i'd also put in the trunk). You should be fine then following the intent of the law, which is TN doesn't want you in public with a loaded firearm without a license...they just use funny wording in the law to say it the whole 'intent to go armed'.

Oh by the way, even with a handgun carry permit, you can't have a loaded long gun in your car or in public. The permit is only good for handguns, not blackjacks, saps, brass knucks, switchblades like in states such as Kentucky and Florida.
