I feel like I am getting screwed! I turned in my paperwork on 9/1 and I still don't have it. I am a CO CCW holder and did not have to take the class here in TN. The DMV confirmed this and told me that all I have to do is wait for issuance. Over 90 days now!

Who should I call/Email to check status?

I find it weird TN just simply mails this HCP. Back in CO you have to go in person to the sheriff's office to get it. The county issues the permit. Not the state. I think TN is crazy to just simply mail this permit through the postal system. TN puts way to much faith in the USPS. I haven't heard anyone say they received theirs with a signature required, so I assume none is.

Just called. I was told that it takes 90 days to get approved/denied. I informed the nice lady that I am over 90 days. She simply said they are working on a back log of permit applications. Oh well! Still waiting. I see things run a bit slow here in the south.

Many new HCPs have been issued in 6 weeks or less lately it seems.

I think some of the trouble is they check with the local sheriff of your county(ies) of residence for the last 4 years. The sheriff's have 30 days after the recieve the copy of your application to report on anything they know about it. Factor in mailing time to and from and it is probably more like 45 days.

Not sure but maybe the delay is hearing back from the CO authorties.

AFAIK there have never been any problems (at least not any major) with sending them back through the USPS. With your picture and address on it, it's not like it would do anyone else much good.

Let me assure you that at least in TN the state issuing them is much better than when the local sheriff's did it.

I remember the early days, but not as well as Glockmeister.

I also remember a little what it was like before that from my Dad. How getting a Permit was all political. (At least in Davidson County.) And was suppose to be only good for that county, but there was an "understanding" with other county's that who ever had the "card" was politically connected in some way.

I can remember several of my Dad's customers carrying illegally when I was a kid. Mostly Truck drivers, business owners, salesmen that traveled a lot, etc.

I actually called too and was told the whole process of waiting for the TBI to get it back to them and blah blah blah...basically was told to wait 90 days. At least they answered the phone!

Day 95 for me! Sad thing is I have a CO CCW that I can't use now. Or couldn't any longer as of 60 ish days ago. You would think a transfer from one state to another would be expedited to some extent. CO says my CCW isn't valid the day I become a TN resident. TN tells me my permit is good for 30 days after becoming a resident. So why the 60 day lapse. GOV CRAP is why. Seems to be a lack of good sense out there in the world these days.

Yransfered mine from Florida around August 11, 2009. Called again today and they said they will do the background check today, and I should have my permit in 2 weeks, lol. They've told me that every time I've called them (3 times now).

The state is "required" by TN statute to issue within 90 days, regardless of status of background checks.

Include your pertinent info, ESPECIALLY that it has been over 90 days.

It has been the experience of many here that once you get her individual attention, and not one of the folks who answer the phones (who may be a temp), you'll get action.

To "tranfer" a GA permit, you still have to take the course. The only break you get is that you only have to pay renewal fee of $50 rather than the $115 first time fee.

The local sheriff could turn out to be a real peenus and deny you. In a case like that, I'd be glad to have a lengthy wait to get it in other ways.

I'll reference CO again here and I know thats getting old but.....the Sheriff himself has no say in whether you get the permit or not. His office simply does the required background checks and takes your money, photo, fingerprints, etc. If your clean then your getting the permit. The state sets the rules the Co. does the work. I got my CO CCW in under 90 days.

The sheriifs have no say here in Tennessee either. From 39-17-1351. Handgun carry permits.

( Send a copy of the application to the sheriff of the county in which the applicant resides.

(2) Within thirty (30) days of receiving an application, the sheriff shall provide the department with any information concerning the truthfulness of the applicant's answers to the eligibility requirements of subsection © that is within the knowledge of the sheriff.

Tennessee is a shall issue state, if you can buy a gun from an FFL you can get a permit. There is nothing the Sheriff can, legally, do about it.

That could be the OP's problem. If it's being treated as a renewal instead of a new permit, the 90 day rule doesn't apply. Last year, my renewal took 5 months almost to the day.

I sure hope not! I thought of that but the logic doesn't make sense. In saying that I realize that, that is our Government. Illogical and not efficient. I wouldn't think my case would be considered a renewal since TN never issued me a HCP before. I think I'll email this person you guys referenced and see whats up.

HexHead had a good thought though, as I see TN allows CO permit holders to only pay the renewal fee also. So, did you pay $50 or $115 when you turned in paperwork to Dept. of Safety?

If $50, maybe they ARE treating it as renewal, which almost ALWAYS takes longer than original application.

In any regard, I certainly advise to email Ms Knight as per my previous post.

Willing to bet you're in the "renewal" file rather than the "new issue" one.

A drawback of saving a few bucks, I guess, as the TN code doesn't specify a time limit on renewal.

At any rate, Ms Knight will likely move things for ya, but be nice, y'know?

One more little possible irony in all this is:

When a TN HCP holder files for renewal, assuming he does it before HCP has expired, the old HCP, along with receipt for the renewal on your person also, is valid even beyond the expiration date, no matter how long it takes.

You might also get a clarification on THAT little point from Ms Knight, meaning, maybe your CO CCW permit is still legit here.

Sometimes though, you just don't know, you know?

I called CO and asked them their take on my CO CCW and was told the day that I no longer was a CO resident that my CO CCW was no longer valid. TN told me it serves as a temporary HCP for 30 days after becoming a resident here. Getting two different stories from two different states. I live here so I'm going with TN's say on this matter. Either way 30 days ended 65 days ago. This sucks! Caught up in the system.

I'll email this lady and be mindfull of my manners.
