He is breaking the rules, that is a fact. It is in the rules that you can have a flag attached to the house, not a pole. HOWEVER, there are exceptions made to rules all the time, sometimes for the wrong reasons, sometimes for the right reason. The right thing to do in this situation, is to let this hero have his pole, fly his flag, and leave him in peace. Hell, for what he has done, the HOA should throw him a F'n parade every year for protecting their rights to be douchbags.

I always liked Tennessee's old hit a flag burner, pay a dollar law. I don't know if it's still on the books, but Tennessee did protect a person's right to free speech by allowing flag burning. We also had a little law that required you to pay a fine if you hit a flag burner. A very stiff, $1 fine.

All I've got on me is a $5 and I'd rather not force the State to make change. whap, whap, whap, whap, and WHAP.

If you can't stand for the colors, GTF OUT!!!!

This just makes me want to cry for the Country and the bunch of fools that have come into positions of "authority". This kind of silliness ranks right up there with the idiot working for the TSA who refused to allow the late Col. Joe Foss board an airliner while wearing his own Medal Of Honor. If I remember correctly, the

TSA guard not only didn't know what the medal was, who Col. Foss was, and tried to confiscate the medal saying it could be used as a weapon.

I remember that.

He wasn't wearing the medal, it was in his pocket and he put it through for x-ray along with a small pocket knife. The screeners didn't have a problem letting him mail the pocket knife back to his home, but took big time issue with the "throwing star" (his medal with no sharp edges.)

He was traveling to West Point where he was to be a guest speaker. A man who was expected to demonstrate to our next generation of military leaders what leadership is all about and his medal of recognition for outstanding service should have been a part of that.

Even if you don't know what a CMH looks like, how can anyone with any form of common sense think that it's an o'k mistake to carry a pocket knife onto a plane, but not an o'k mistake to have a 5 pointed star with no sharp edges? The 9/11 terrorists used box cutters for christ sake.

What's more, it wasn't ONE TSA screener who made the mistake. It was several as he kept getting passed up the screener ranks for evaluation.

Utter stupidity.

Those that earn the MOH should be able to do pretty much whatever the hell they want...

When I was in the USAF, I made a traffic stop on this guy.

When a guy hands you (E-4) his military I.D. that has "Medal of Honor" stamped across the top, you just salute and say, "Have a wonderful day, sir" and walk away.

Who won a CMH and didn't get promoted beyond the rank of E-4 before the medal was awarded???? (Other than those who were awarded the medal postumously (sp?).)

In case anybody wondered

Second Lieutenant Barfoot's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 23 May 1944, near Carano, Italy. With his platoon heavily engaged during an assault against forces well entrenched on commanding ground, 2d Lt. Barfoot (then Tech. Sgt.) moved off alone upon the enemy left flank. He crawled to the proximity of 1 machinegun nest and made a direct hit on it with a hand grenade, killing 2 and wounding 3 Germans. He continued along the German defense line to another machinegun emplacement, and with his tommygun killed 2 and captured 3 soldiers. Members of another enemy machinegun crew then abandoned their position and gave themselves up to Sgt. Barfoot. Leaving the prisoners for his support squad to pick up, he proceeded to mop up positions in the immediate area, capturing more prisoners and bringing his total count to 17. Later that day, after he had reorganized his men and consolidated the newly captured ground, the enemy launched a fierce armored counterattack directly at his platoon positions. Securing a bazooka, Sgt. Barfoot took up an exposed position directly in front of 3 advancing Mark VI tanks. From a distance of 75 yards his first shot destroyed the track of the leading tank, effectively disabling it, while the other 2 changed direction toward the flank. As the crew of the disabled tank dismounted, Sgt. Barfoot killed 3 of them with his tommygun. He continued onward into enemy terrain and destroyed a recently abandoned German fieldpiece with a demolition charge placed in the breech. While returning to his platoon position, Sgt. Barfoot, though greatly fatigued by his Herculean efforts, assisted 2 of his seriously wounded men 1,700 yards to a position of safety. Sgt. Barfoot's extraordinary heroism, demonstration of magnificent valor, and aggressive determination in the face of pointblank fire are a perpetual inspiration to his fellow soldiers.

The fact of the matter is that every time this guy drops a turd, the turd is twice the man of the rest of this neighborhood all rolled up into one. If I had the ability I would set a freaking 90mm howitzer in his front yard in front of teh pole and every time he raised or lowerd the flag I would set off every car alarm for a mile.

By the way guys, there is no such award as a CMH. It is the Medal of Honor or MOH.

Barfoot scares Chuck Norris.....HOA should beware!!

Seriously...these douchebags need a collective beatdown, while Barfoot sips beers and watches.

I was at Ft. Campbell clinic this morning when this came on the news, some guys had hurt knees, backs, different pains and whatnot. When the story started unfolding, I'd say every soldier in there was ready to make a trip and talk with the HOA..... More upset were the civilians working behind the counter.

UPDATE: Deadline dissolves in Barfoot flag fight

A homeowner's association said today it will drop threatened legal proceedings against Col. Van T. Barfoot over the Medal of Honor recipient's refusal to get rid of a vertical flag pole.

"The Sussex Square Homeowners Association Board has agreed to withdraw legal action previously announced for Friday, December 11, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.," U.S. Sen. Mark Warner announced this evening shortly after 6.

After reading some more on this story, apparently the HOA did have some legal standing in regards to a flagpole needing approval by the HOA.

That being said; the man is a is a veteran of 3 wars and earned a MOH. If he wants to put a flippin' cannon on his front yard and fire it on the hour every hour and play revile when he raises the flag and taps upon lowering the flag, not only do you let him without giving him any crap you thank him every time he does it.
