After 3 years on dialup and 3 years of being lied to by AT&T about DSL being available soon, we took the plunge and had a Hughes.net dish installed today.

Now I can view pictures and videos again, and not have to take my laptop to the library for software upgrades.

Home network is back up with 2 Windows laptops, a Linux laptop and a Linux desktop all talking to each other, the Web and the network printer.

Life is good!

Not to be nosy and if this is too much just say so or ignore but, I have thought about Hughes net as well but it seems really expensive. Just using ball park figures, how much does it cost to get set up and running, etc.?

I just gave up a 20meg charter line (actually only getting around 8meg +/- hardwired and around 7megs wirelessly) @59.99/mo.

Charter doesnt offer svcs at our new house, so we had to go w/frontier DSL.;)

Turns out my new 3meg is $$twenty bucks$$ less a month with wireless router included actually is clocking around 7megs (Wireless!!!):D:D:D

+ got a free phone line my choice of incoming or outgoing! Picked incoming and then hooked up w/google voice so as to make outgoing;) We went all cellular years ago, but hey, home phone for free? Why not..

Expensive is right. I exhausted all other alternatives first. No cable available, no DSL, dialup sucks.

Minus a couple of rebates totaling about $200, I paid about $200 up front for installation and purchased equipment. Paid another $125 to installer to put the dish on a pole instead of on my roof (14!! lag bolts required). I believe the rebates are over - they were 'Black Friday' deals.

$59.95/month, 2 year contract.

With the Hughes dish added to my radio antennas and Dish Network dish, my side yard now looks like the surface of the Death Star.

I need a really big laser cannon to complete the effect. :D

Laser cannon or some Rohn 55 with a big Mosley pro 96 on top, that ought to do it. :D

Thanks for the other info, that's what price range I remember when I was looking in to it........oh well, I'll keep what I got, good luck with it, sounds like it is working pretty good.
