Whats the RIGHT way to clean a gun?

Recommended Posts

There seems to be a LOT of opinions out there and I am looking for some solid advice. When I clean my rifles, usual situation is a patch of Hoppes, followed by dry patches - occasionally a bore brush too. My problem is that I usually can't seem to completely get the patches all the way clean. There's always just a little teemy bit of fouling on the final patch. I'll use patch-out as well every now and then to deal with the copper.

Am I expecting too much and I should accept that the rifle will never be 100% clean? Or am I just not doing it right?

help!

I do not know what type of rifle you are cleaning, but really getting one completely clean will most likely not affect its performance. I do not see the point in getting one spotless unless you plan on putting it in storage for a while or something. Obviously if it is a really accurate rifle, cleaning will help, but for a hunting rifle or plinkster or something, I would not spend the extra time on it. Just my thoughts.

My PPK and my wife's sig I clean and oil til Ifeel it's as good as I'm going to get them, which is pretty damn clean. My glock I just toss in the dishwasher with the pots, hot scrub.

I don't think I have ever cleaned one till the final cloth was perfect white...and never had a problem, I think you're doing a fine job....and I do the same with my glock, except I use the washing machine.
