Who here took Home Economics in High School?

I ask because I caught my wife making Pecan Pie, and she had no clue how to pull the flavor out of the nuts.

I have an alternate motive for asking that involves pie. But I will wait to reveal it. Carry on.

not bad there strickj. You are headed in the correct direction.

As far as getting maximum pecan flavor from the nuts, powder them and heat them with butter in a pan and then mix with your base filling. Release the oil using the butter as a solvent.

But did you ever have a home economics class? or was it considered "less than masculine".

My high school had a pretty cool rule - Home Ec and Shop were a combo. You signed up and you had one semester of each. So even those guys who would never sign up for HE because it was "girly stuff" could say "Yeah, I signed up for Shop and they made me do that other stuff too."

I was called all sorts of names for taking HE, "gay" among them, but for 55 minutes I had 22 girls all to myself, not to mention the hot teacher. They all took pity on me, because I was a guy and didn't know anything about cooking or sewing. One table of the girls were cheerleaders and I got to know them all very well. So I can say that all that I remember from Home Economics is the pie if you know what I mean.

I already knew how to change oil, set timings and gear lash and valve clearance.

I took home econ. I didn't sign up for it, I was put in it as a punishment. It wasn't long before I realized this was where all the babes were. Kinda like throwing the rabbit in the briar patch. I remember making an apron and changing diapers on a doll, but no recollection of baking a pie.

no home ec, but just call me a momma's boy. I learned all the "home ec" stuff from dear old mom. As for the pecan pie....haven't a clue, now if you want to know how to make a New York Style Cheesecake....well that's something else. Made a cheesecake last night, do you know how to get the most flavor out of the cheese?????

I went to an all guys high school, no home ec class. When I was registering for classes for senior year they had worked a deal with the gilrs school (it was next door on the other side of the fence). They were going to allow a limited number of seniors from our school to take a home ec course. Me being the over-hormoned typical 17 year old signed right up for it.

When the schedules came out no one got to take the class. Seems just about every senior at my school signed up for the class. So they decided to not do it rather than pick 30 guys to take the course. (they were going to take five guys for each of the six classes daily over there.) I was pissed, as was everyone else. Had to continue settling for chasing girls before and after school and not during school.

LOL...way back in the mid 70's I took...Bachelor Living, aka Home Eck for guys..this was California at the beginning of the at the onset of the liberal invasion. When a public school education was still pretty decent...at least in the "central valley"...

I took Home Ec to pick up chicks. (it worked), then went to culinary school as well.

To "pull" the flavor from the pecans, you need to either toast them slightly, sauté them with butter, or add an alcohol.
