ground hog

after several weeks of trying to kill a groundhog behind my shop i finally did it! i shot him at 34 yards with my bow. shot him in the belly and he fell over and laid there for a few minutes. i walked up to shoot him again if needed and he flopped in circles while i watched my arrow brake into 3 pieces as he rolled into his hole before i could shoot him again. i'm sure he is dead...or will be dead soon. by the size of him, he was the grand daddy and i believe there are other ones in the hole as well that arent as big as he was. i'm sure we will be smelling him soon! anytime i get to shoot something at work, it was a good day! lol :D

Sometimes I think Groundhogs with a bow are harder to kill than mature bucks. We have some that have been destroying our food plots. Have seen them several times but never able to get a shot at one.

Cook him for Thanksgiving!

Whistlepigs WERE a welcome Thanksgiving fare in Appalachia, especially during the depression years. Can testify they are indeed quite good.

Supposedly beat Hoover Hog hands down, but never had had one of those to compare.

I had a problem with one at my house. Have a pretty good size garden I didn't want to share with him. I was home and watching for him to come out yesterday morning to sun bath and the .243 did the rest.

Offered to gut him for the wife to cook, but she didn't like the idea.:)

my wife's grandparents have a farm in indiana, there is a barn by one of the fields close to the house and several groundhogs life under the barn. those things can clear out a huge piece beans quick! i shot one beginning of the year and they were quite glad. they wanted me to stay and shoot the rest of them.

Am I the only person who only kills for a reason (food, danger, property destruction, loss of liberty)? I'm certainly not a lib, or against hunting but have never enjoyed the sight of something dying.

No your not and to insinuate that, is not cool. Groundhogs are destructive little creatures, and can be exterminated for many reasons.

I guess the part that bothered me was the fact that it was done with a bow and arrow and the excitment he descibed about him "flopping around in circles" (his words not mine). It's those kind of desciptions that give those bastards from PETA ammunition, and I surely don't want them to have any more.

If I need to kill an animal for destructive reasons, I can think of more humane ways of doing it. I've taken out many squirrels that were getting in my attic and opossums in my crawlspace, but always used a firearm and dropped them on the spot, safely and humanely. If I couldn't get a safe shot, I just didn't take it and the offending critter lived to fight another day.

I guess it's just the way I was brought up. If I had shot a groundhog that had not done any actual damage, when I was a kid, my dad, or grandfather would have made me dig into the burrow until I found it, field dress it and I'd be eating it for supper.

I shot a blue jay with a bb gun, once as a child. They don't taste like chicken.

I have been asked to kill as many crows as I can by farmers, and I have never eaten one of them, and I won't be any time soon.

This is not the place to be pushing your convictions onto others.

I killed a opossum about a month ago just cause he was in my yard.

Some animals are just useless.

It's a rare and fortunate man who has never needed to eat any crow in his life.

I saw one today basking in the sun along side I 75 coming up from ATL. I have never killed one. Killed thousands of prairie dogs though. Who needs a reason? If its living it can be killed! On the suffering part, I have to agree with trying to minimize it. I, as with most hunters/varmint shooters probably like one shot quick kills. No need to be a dick I guess.

hearing stories like that, is such a turn off for somebody who thinks to try hunting for the first time.

hunting will be like religion , you like it only if parents forced you to do it as a child.

I am at a loss for words here....

If your opinions are as you have expressed....why in the world would you even THINK about hunting??????????

i newer been hunting, i'm trying to bring my self to it

but hearing horror stories like that is not helpful at all.

i meant to say that is just getting more and more extreme.

when you watch hunting on tv. it is made to look as normal as possible.

one shot one kill.

but just randomly shooting animals and truly enjoying it , is sick and he should consider some psychological screening test.

if you work in slaughter house. and there is few people capable to do that,

don't go around and make it sound normal
