As far a public places to shoot about the only option is the Sciota range in the Cherokee National Forest near Erwin. There are quite a few private ranges around though.

While this can be true, it really depends - time of day, day of week, weather, and such make a huge difference. Earlier times on weekdays tend to be pretty good, while right after work usually means there are quite a few people, then as dark approaches it thins out again. Weekends are usually pretty busy for most of the day.

A group of us should go together, lease some land, and have our own range. I hate driving over an hour to get to a range and then have to wait an hour or two to shoot while someone else is waiting for me to finish so they can shoot.

When living in NC, I had a friend that belonged to a "hunting club". A group of about twenty guys that leased some land. I think they each kicked in a couple of hundred bucks a year (this was twenty years ago). There was a cabin on the property, nothing fancy, and they used the place year round for hunting, shooting, cookouts, and just general get out of town time.

I suspect finding a group of guys would be pretty easy. Finding the property to lease is another story. Just thinking (dreaming) out loud.
