Israeli Gun Culture? No, I Dont Think So.

Recommended Posts

For people lauding Israel's stand on guns for private citizens, this thread in a different forum should be enlightening. Keep in mind Israel is basically a socialist state and this just confirms that. The gist is:

In order to have a licensed gun in Israel (Each gun has it's own license, so if you have 5 guns you need 5 licenses) you must be an Israeli Citizen for 3 years, and then you must show a reasonable need. That need can be because you live in a "Dangerous" neighborhood (Like the Shtichim) or it could be job related (Police, Security Guard, etc).

You can not ship guns in a lift. You can ilegally smuggle them in a lift, but that's a bad idea.

If you bring the gun with you on the airplane, and check it with the Airlines, when you get to Israel the gun will be handed over to the police, who will hold it until you have the proper license.

Israel is a Democratic state with socialistic ideals and influences... Obviously they recognize that gun ownership is a vital component of a free society, but considering the climate of that region (and I don't mean the weather), it is understandably tightly controlled.

Whoa. You sound like an anti. The climate is tough so the answer is to control guns held by law-abiding citizens. WTF????? Tell me you didnt mean that.

Another post in the same thread cited did mention that with all the various exceptions there are de facto more legal guns on the street in Israel than here.

But it is typical of statist bureaucracy to want to control, license, and tax every activity by the law-abiding.

I didn't say that I agreed with tighter control, or that it was the 'answer' (I don't believe that at all)... I simply recognize that it is a common reaction of any government to do so, which is why I merely admitted that it is "understandable". I don't expect Israel to govern their citizens any differently than this country or any other, given the distribution of political power and socialistic influence. I'm not sitting here with any agenda to rationalize government intrusion into individual liberties and personal freedom (you know me better than that)... but I'm not naive either. I understand the concept that governments will implement any restriction which the people will allow, or can be convinced is 'necessary', if it means that the control is given to the government... that doesn't mean I agree with it, at all.

I'll see if I can find the link from before...

I remember reading about a guy from NY who has dual citizenship in USA and Israel, and is serving his required time in the Israeli Army before coming back to the US and enlisting here...

The gist of it was that you had to go through all of the beauracratic BS to get a permit to CONCEAL, but that carrying openly was not only allowed, it is encouraged. Seems that most people over there figure if you're hiding it, you're up to something. The thread was written about a couple from the US who saw him with his Uzi hanging from his shoulder in a bar - perfectly normal. I really need to find the link, as it was a pretty funny read - they assumed that he didn't speak English, and the wife was a bit freaked out.
