(For obvious safety reasons.)

Obvious safety reasons? What's the difference between having one in the chamber on my rifle than in my handgun? Seems like if it's for safety reasons then I wouldn't be legally allowed to carry one in my handgun...

Okay, maybe it’s only obvious to me.

The difference is that if your handgun discharges in an impact the round is probably going down or down and forward. A high powered rifle in a rifle rack could discharge horizontally.

Another difference is that you usually aren’t handling your carry gun getting in and out of the car. Putting a rifle in and out of a rifle rack with a round chambered just reeks of carelessness, but again, that’s just my opinion.

My point was that I don’t think the ban on having a round chambered was a control issue, but just a safety issue.

Not so much for safety as for legal reasons. The law does specify a chambered round when discussing long guns. Sidearms can have a chambered round.

I see no point in arguing the legal differences as a pistol is more readily available for self defense than a long gun and we have far bigger issues to tackle when it comes to legal carry.

If I have time to pull a long gun out of the vehicle, I'm pretty sure that cycling the action isn't going to have much impact on my time to target. This is not true of pulling a sidearm from the holster.

Pick your fights carefully folks. Long guns with chambered rounds aren't worth fighting about and are something that people looking to shoot deer from a vehicle seek. Keep your self defense weapon chambered and unlocked, a long gun behind the seat is a poor choice for a self defense weapon. If you have time to pull a long gun, you have time to chamber a round.
