Question About Shooting Rifles

Recommended Posts

I currently live in Spring Hill on roughly 3/4 of an acre. My wife and I are looking for about 2-10 acres in the Williamson county area near Arrington, and also around Spring Hill. We are just looking for land now but will evenutally build a house there. Are there any laws in TN that deal with how much land you need in order to shoot handguns and rifles on your own property? I will not consider the plot unless I could sight in my rifles, target practice with a handgun, etc.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

In Knox County, John E Law told me that it was alright to shoot as long as I was not shooting towards a dwelling, other building or a place where people were likely to be.

I shoot in a depression towards a dirt pile that I built. Its not likely that a bullet will escape.

Several months ago there was a situation I read about in the local paper. The best I recall, a resident had been using his private land for private shooting for him and some friends. Someone complained, disturbing the peace or something. I'll search the Citizen Tribune site and see if I can find it.

As I understand it,

City ordnances apply and, of course, vary from city to city.

I believe there is also a law saying that you have to be a certain distance from a dwelling (e.g. a home) to shoot. Something like 100ft or so.

Beyond that, make a GOOD back stop like a big dirt mound and plink away safely. Neighbors can complain, but nothing will happen so long as you comply with ordnances and don't have rounds landing on someone else's property.

I couldn't find any newspaper archives on it but I think this may be the same issue.

There is another factor to consider other than the law or the neighbors and this is true of anyone that has an area (berm) on their proprty for shooting. That is your homeowners. There have been cases where insurance companies have learned of homeowners using their own private property for personal shooting and canceling coverage based on the claim that the owner has a shooting range.
