DMV Wait Times Could Increase To 2 Hours

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Department of Safety proposed cuts at a Thursday budget hearing that would affect driver's license fees and license station wait times.

Closing six driver's license stations and cutting 34 positions was proposed, resulting in wait times at driver's license stations to go from 45 minutes to an expected two hours.

The driver's license stations that would close are locations in LaVergne, Lawrence, Weakley, Hamblen, Anderson and Tennessee Towers.

The department would also eliminate a third of Capitol security, half of the air team and leave only one D.A.R.E. officer. An additional reduction of 22 positions might be necessary in metropolitan service centers, like Nashville, Memphis, Chattanooga and Knoxville.

The department proposed cutting up to 85 troopers, including 25 road troopers. Scott, Bledsoe, Meigs, Sequatchie, Hancock, Johnson, Cannon, Clay, Pickett, Trousdale, Moore, Lake and Houston counties would lose troopers.

Gov. Phil Bredesen suggested raising driver's license fees to avoid trooper cuts.

All cuts are proposed. Nothing is final until the governor makes a decision and the Legislature passes it.

why don't they make the cuts where it is needed, like the the staff or empty suits in office holding up a desk. true closing down the licensing offices will make a ton of cash for the state, i have never seen a larger group of people in a single office that deserves to be fired, talk about overpayed idiots, if fact close them all down except 4, one in Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville. everyone else can walk, or take a horse. or drive with out a piece of paper, this will make it real easy to stop drunk drivers, speeders, and commerce and make everyone have to pay the walking tax, and the soon breathing tax. and don't forget the going to sleep tax and the retroactive awake tax. by doing this it should also close down state offices, welfare offices, unemployment offices, permit offices, and courthouses. after all if we cant work we cant pay, if we have no courts we need less jails, and if everything is already decided we don't need any representatives. makes sense to me!:D:dropjaw::rofl:

Years ago I had an idea for a computer set up much like an ATM for renewing your DL.

Same computer checks when you walk into the DMV.

Have it use either your thumb print or face recognition through the photo it would take of you when you start the machine.

If you have a valid license, no questionable variables, outstanding stuff etc... you could get your license right there.

Heck I'd even pay an extra fee just to use the machine, avoiding the drones who infest the DMV's payrolls nowadays.

It could look like one of those old fashion picture booths you would see in K-Mart years ago.

Phil Bredesen sucks. I work for the state, and I could easily cut 25% of the state's budget without anyone ever missing anything. These SOBs don't care about shrinking the Government. They always threaten to cut the things you'd miss like school sports, police protection, parks, etc. They'd never think of cutting useless pork barrel projects and contracts with their buddies no one even is aware of. I hate politics and ALL politicians.

I agree in principle but I'd like specifics. What could the state cut that no one would notice? I'd argue that those stupid tenth of a mile signs are useless and I'm not sold sold on the whole tdot driver help thing.

On the other hand there is a lot o stuff I don't want the state to stop doing.

For one, get rid of all the people that draw a paycheck but don't do anything to earn it.

For two, get rid of the Edison program that's costing the State millions, but still isn't doing what was promised of it.

I wonder if they are considering jacking up the fees on the already stupidly overpriced HCP?

They said on Newschannel5 last night handgun carry permit fees would be going up too. The sheep will applaud that as a good fix to the problem.

Because threatening to cut high profile stuff gets folks riled up and then they can move their agenda along by appearing to fix the problem with higher taxes and fees. Cutting useless stuff we don't need anyway doesn't further their agenda.
