In some states....yes.....enhanced penalties for battery on or killing a Law Enforcement working dog.

I did some reading on just that a while back...

I could be wrong as I'm going off memory, but I believe killing a LE service animal is a felony w/ a 10yr sentence...

Not in TN as far as I know.

(a) (1) (A) It is an offense to knowingly and unlawfully kill the animal of another without the owner's effective consent.

( A violation of subdivision (a)(1)(A) is theft of property, graded according to the value of the animal, and punished in accordance with § 39-14-105.

(2) In determining the value of a police dog, fire dog, search and rescue dog, service animal or police horse under § 39-14-105, the court shall consider the value of the police dog, fire dog, search and rescue dog, service animal or police horse as both the cost of the animal and any specialized training the animal received.

(B) A person is justified in killing the animal of another if the person acted under a reasonable belief that the animal was creating an imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury to that person or another or an imminent danger of death to an animal owned by that person. A person is not justified in killing the animal of another if at the time of the killing the person is trespassing upon the property of the owner of the animal. The justification for killing the animal of another authorized by this subsection (B) shall not apply to a person who, while engaging in or attempting to escape from criminal conduct, kills a police dog that is acting in its official capacity. In that case the provisions of subsection (a) shall apply to the person.

Dude went straight to a felony, because the K-9 is easily worth more than $500.

A Shepard is the only dog I've ever wanted, but our Maine Coon found us last March, and I don't want to scare him off. I was never a cat person because I'm horribly allergic. This cat doesn't put off the allergen to make me sneeze or itch. I can't believe how much personality and loyalty he has.

Does anyone here have a Maine Coon?

I am keenly aware...we have more than one.

It was the "10 year sentence" part that I was commenting on.

People kill people and don't even get that in TN...

I agree the MFers deserve a special place in hell. I loathe cruelty to animals and IMO do not ever get the punishment they deserve, just slaps on the wrist. Geez, they should get more just because it is a police or military animal. This kind of thing just makes me so friggin' angry!

Perhaps it's time to amend the Constitution to read, "Punishment no more cruel and unusual than the crime"

Then we could beat these people to death and leave their carcass in a ditch.

I did some hunting around on that, and couldn't find it repeated. I did find where several states have protective measures that exceed standard animal cruelty charges, but I didn't read real deep into each one's.

I did see that it's a automatic 3rd degree felony in Texas.

Either way, whether karma or justice, I hope the a-hole lands in his proverbial (or literal, for that matter) ditch someday soon. :panic:
