Coyote colors

I've seen coyotes in several different colored coats, but my father killed one today that looks rather unusual. I've seen dark ones, but this thing is black!

No, I've not seen one that dark either. I've noticed they appear to change color slightly with the seasons. A bit of domestic dog mixed in there, perhaps?

Could be. It was running with another coyote, so I assume by that and by it's features it's mostly coyote.

Here's one that I killed off of my place a couple years ago. He may have some slight domestic blood, but his actions were 100% coyote. I've never seen any other like it. The pic doesn't do justice as to how much 'blue' he had.

all the coyotes i have saw or shot this year have been almost black.

There was one like that with pure coyote confirmation running around here in the area. I had plans to wait til winter and a prime pelt, one of the neighbors shot it in Aug/Sept and let it rot in place!

Did you have a problem with that? I wouldn't eat a coyote but just letting it rot seems disrespectful. I'm not a hunter so I know less than beans about this but I think, if I shot an animal, I wouldn't just let it rot. Even if it was a starling.

Around here they don't have time to rot. You shoot one in the afternoon, and go back the next afternoon and nothing is left except the skeleton, and a little hair.

Roger that. The only animal with the gastrointestinal tolerance to consume a coyote carcass, is in fact, a coyote. They're nasty creatures. Vile canines.

While black coyotes have not been common in the past, they are showing up more frequently. We are seeing more and more black variations this year. In the western states where we hunt sometimes (AZ & SD), a black coyote is still a rarity.

Whether it is in fact a gene from the domestic dog pool is debatable.

Nonetheless ... it's cool to see.

I'm in Middle Tennessee too, and curious about coyote hunting... would actually get started doing some. What do most of you use as far as a gun and what round for this? I've been looking for a .243 in hopes I could use for both deer and coyotes. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks.

Your rationale is correct. Most people around here use their deer rifles. I hunt them with everything from my Remington 700 in .30-06, my son's .243, and my AR in 5.56.

All are scoped and good to go.
